South Africa overwhelmed England by 103 runs to march into the semifinal of the Under-19 World Cup at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville.

South Africa were joined in the semifinals by Australia, who overcame Bangladesh by five wickets in another quarterfinal fixture.

Put in, South Africa were dismissed for 244 off the last delivery of the 50th over, largely due to half-centuries from Murray Coetzee and Theunis de Bruyn. Quinton de Kock, the tournament?s top scorer, failed to get going, Jamie Overton dismissing him for seven. A second-wicket partnership of 65 between Chad Bowes (46) and Gihahn Cloete (22) took them to 80, but two wickets in two overs ? Cloete was bowled by Adam Bell before Overton dismissed Bowes for his second wicket ? left South Africa in tatters.

De Bruyn and Coetzee then added 96 for the fourth wicket, taking South Africa closer to the 200-mark. The partnership came to an end when De Bruyn (54) was bowled by Brett Hutton with the score on 178, but Coetzee (68) went on till the 49th over to help South Africa post a decent total. Reece Topley took 3 for 45, accounting for most of the South African lower order.

England overcame the third-over dismissal of Daniel Bell-Drummond with a 100-run association for the second wicket between Alex Davies and Ben Foakes, both of whom made 54, but once this partnership was snapped by Prenalen Subrayen, the offspinner, the bottom fell out of their batting. The last eight wickets fell for the addition of just 29 runs as no other batsman reached double digits, Subrayen finishing with 4 for 24 and sending England crashing to 141.

In the other quarterfinal at Endeavour Park in Townsville, Australia overcame an early wobble in their chase of Bangladesh?s 171 to win fairly comfortably in the end. Australia bowled Bangladesh out for 171 but were rocked by Taskin Ahmed and Abu Jayed as they slipped to 33 for 4. However, William Bosisto (71*) and Travis Head (44) stabilised the innings and piloted Australia to 172 for 5, with more than four overs in the bag.

Brief scores:

South Africa U-19:?244 in 50 overs (Murray Coetzee 67, Theunis de Bruyn 54; Reece Topley 3-45, Craig Overton 2-43) bt England U-19:?141 in 40.3 overs (Alex Davies 54, Ben Foakes 54; Prenalen Subrayen 4-24, Lizaad Williams 2-23) by 103 runs.
