Texas Senate race a new test for GOP establishment

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? The story line on the Republican Senate race in Texas is a now familiar one: A veteran politician supported by the GOP establishment is challenged by a young insurgent backed by national conservative groups.

In this distinctly Texas episode in the saga for control of the Senate, David Dewhurst is the reserved, self-made millionaire and lieutenant governor facing off against Ted Cruz, the feisty son of a Cuban exile who calls himself "a proven fighter for liberty because his family knows what it means to lose it."

The underdog is former Dallas mayor and businessman Tom Leppert, who offers himself as the no-nonsense alternative to politics as usual.

In heavily Republican Texas, whoever wins the GOP primary on Tuesday is almost sure to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Cruz and Leppert acknowledge that Dewhurst is more familiar with voters and has more cash ? he's spent $9.2 million of his $200 million fortune on the primary. But both hope to force a runoff, and if one succeeds, the runner-up could win in July. While there have been no reliable, independent polls in the nine-candidate race, those released by partisans show Dewhurst on the cusp of getting the 50 percent-plus-one he needs to avoid a runoff, with Cruz in second place.

Conservative groups that complain many Senate Republicans now in office are too quick to compromise have spent more than $4 million trying to help Cruz. The benefactors include South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint's Senate Conservatives Fund, the anti-tax Club for Growth and former Texas Rep. Dick Armey's FreedomWorks.

Similar Senate primary battles are taking place in Wisconsin, where tea party favorite Mark Neuman is running against former Gov. Tommy Thompson, and in Arizona, where six-term Rep. Jeff Flake is being challenged by Wil Cardon, who also casts himself as a tea party candidate.

Cruz is drawing comparisons between Texas and Indiana, where state Treasurer Richard Mourdock defeated incumbent Sen. Richard Lugar in the Republican primary. Leppert looks for inspiration from Nebraska, where Deb Fischer, a state legislator, rose up from third place to become the GOP's Senate nominee there.

Cruz, 41, made his name representing Texas before the Supreme Court in high-profile cases. He has endorsements from former GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in addition to several tea party groups.

Dewhurst, 66, has the backing of Gov. Rick Perry and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as well as support from the state's most influential Republican clubs, anti-abortion organizations and political action committees.

There are few significant policy differences between the top three candidates: All oppose abortion rights, amnesty for illegal immigrants and tax increases of any kind. That has forced their campaigns to focus on personality and records with often harsh attack ads.

Tall, reserved and impeccably dressed, Dewhurst was raised by a single mother after his father was killed by a drunken driver. He served in the Air Force and as a CIA officer in Bolivia before returning to Houston, where he started a natural gas business and made his fortune.

Cruz's father fought against Cuba's Batista regime in the late 1950s before getting a student visa to attend the University of Texas. Cruz was born in Alberta, Canada, where his dad worked in the oil fields before moving back to Houston. A champion debater, Cruz attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School and has spent most of his career in politically appointed positions in the Bush administration or working for the Texas attorney general.

Leppert, 57, has been CEO of several companies, including the Turner Corp., the nation's largest construction company. He ran for Dallas mayor as a reformer and balanced the city's budget.

The competition between Dewhurst and Cruz turned ugly early. Each has spent more than $4 million on TV and radio attack ads.

Dewhurst has derided Cruz as a trial lawyer even though Cruz has specialized in handling appeals. His campaign also pilloried Cruz for representing a Chinese tire company appealing a $26 million judgment that it had stolen intellectual property from a U.S. company. Cruz replied he was only doing his job as an attorney for an international law firm.

Cruz, meanwhile, attacks Dewhurst as a "timid, moderate politician" who too often has compromised with Democrats.

"Enough of these little kitty cats we keep sending to Washington," Cruz said. "David Dewhurst will compromise every day in the U.S. Senate. ... It's what he's done every day in state government."

Boasting about his experience as a top business executive, Leppert calls Dewhurst a career politician and Cruz a government staffer. Dewhurst says Leppert's record as Dallas mayor is too liberal for Texas Republicans.

Whoever wins the GOP nomination will face one of two Democrats, former state Rep. Paul Sadler and party activist Sean Hubbard. No Democrat has won a statewide office in Texas since 1994.

Apple and Google Are Running Away With It

Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM??) is losing it. Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT??) feels that it can buy its way in. Nokia (NYSE: NOK??) is willing to switch allegiances -- at the right price.

Two kingdoms rule the world
Fresh data out of tech tracker IDC leave little doubt that we're living in a world of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL??) iOS and Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG??) Android.

Of the 152.3 million smartphones shipped during the first three months of the year, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, iPhones and Androids accounted for 82% of the market. To put this into the appropriate mind-blowing perspective, the two platforms combined for just 54.5% of the units shipped during last year's first quarter.

Didn't it seem as if Apple and Google were already cornering the market a year ago? Yes, but the growing global popularity of iOS and Android at the expense of older mobile operating systems is finally starting to take its toll overseas.

Nokia-championed Symbian -- a former fave around the world -- has seen its market share slip from 26% a year ago to less than 7% today. RIM's BlackBerry has seen its share of smartphone shipments cut in half to 6.4%. There were more devices powered by Linux and Windows shipped than there were a year ago, but neither platform is growing as quickly as the smartphone market itself. In other words, they too are surrendering market share.

Apple vs. Android
It's hard to complain about Apple. The world's most valuable technology company is the only one making some serious money in mobile since Google pitches Android as an open-source platform to handset manufacturers.

However, even though Apple and Google combine for 82% of the market, there really is just one company that's a threat to run away with the market on its own. In terms solely of market penetration, Android is the Simon to Apple's Garfunkel.

Android accounted for 89.9 million -- or 59% -- of the 152.3 million smartphones that were shipped this past quarter. That's a 145% surge over the past year.

Apple's no slouch. The 35.1 million iPhones it sold during the first three months of this calendar year -- a figure confirmed by the company in its fiscal second quarter -- represents an 89% improvement. Over the past year Apple has seen its share of the smartphone market grow from 18% to 23%. Apple fans don't care, and rightfully so. Apple's the one making most of the money in mobile. Google's giving it away. However, Apple isn't going to be happy if the Android continues to pad its lead. The moment that developers turn their attention to Android apps first may be a game changer.

Windows may be a forgotten sixth-place finisher with just 2.2% of the market, but no one should be surprised if Microsoft pole vaults its way to the bronze medal in a year. Microsoft is rewarding Nokia handsomely to champion Windows Phone instead of Symbian. RIM is on a downward spiral. Linux may have its fringe fans, but there's no one financially backing the platform the way that Microsoft is invested in mobile.

If you've been watching TV over the past few weeks you've been bombarded with ads for Nokia's Lumia 900. Microsoft is taking this seriously, and it's never afraid to cut a big check. Reports earlier this year surfaced indicating that the world's leading software company is paying developers of hot iOS and Android titles to make sure that they back its fledgling platform.

The market seems to be carved in two right now. Apple has the well-to-do and fashion-forward markets covered. Android is gunning for the masses. If Microsoft succeeds -- and that's a big "if" right now -- it remains to be seen if it will simply come at the techie expense of BlackBerry or if it will be truly successful and disrupt Apple and Google.

Then again, why rain on the parade. This is the moment to shine for Android and iOS. Everyone else at this point is just jealous.

Apple jacks

Scratches

Scratches in laminate floors can often be filled in with a little bit of wood putty that is similar in color to the floor. Use a putty knife to fill in the cracks, and then clean the area with a dry cloth to remove any residue. You should put some type of seal over the wood putty to protect the repair; clear nail polish can be an excellent solution if the scratch on your laminate floors is small.

Another option is to check with the manufacturer to find out if they sell scratch repair pencils. This pencil is made of a waxy substance that is color matched to your specific floor. You ?color? over the area in your laminate flooring that has the scratch and small bits of the pencil fill in the scratch. Consider purchasing one of these pencils if available when purchasing your laminate floors to take care of any scratches as they appear.

Splinters

If a splinter has dislodged from your laminate flooring, save it to repair your floors. Begin by cleaning the hole left from the splinter as well as the splinter itself with a 1 to 4 white vinegar and water solution. Use an old toothbrush to apply the solution, working it into the cracks and continuing to clean the area until all grime around the splinter is removed. Allow both the splinter and the laminate floors to dry.

With both pieces dry and clean, apply a small amount of wood glue to the hole in your laminate flooring left by the splinter. A cotton swab or small paintbrush is an excellent tool for the job. Then carefully push the splinter into place. Remove any glue that has seeped out with a damp cloth.

To make sure that the splinter dries in place, put a sheet of wax paper over the completed repair. Then stack several books over the wax paper and leave them there for at least eight hours.

Holes

Holes in laminate flooring created by dropping objects or even splintering that was not quickly repaired is an easy fix. Begin by contacting your manufacturer to find out if they sell a laminate flooring filler that is color matched for your floors. Most manufacturers sell a small tube that will fill in and conceal any small dents in the floor, based on the flooring that you have installed. If the manufacturer does not sell a color matched filler, go to a home improvement store and buy the filler that best matches your floor.

When you have gotten the filler, follow the manufacturer?s instructions to use it on your laminate flooring. Most require that you use a small putty knife and force as much filler into the hole in your laminate floors as possible. Then you should allow it to dry and lightly sand just the area containing the patch. Wood putty can also be used instead of a filler, but should be sealed after and carefully matched to the floors.

Most laminate flooring damage can easily be fixed by using one of these methods. The only exception is if the damage is extensive, and over large areas of flooring. In these cases, it is best to replace the affected area with new laminate flooring. For this job, consider calling a professional or at least the manufacturer of your laminate floors for suggestions.

Forest diversity from Canada to the sub-tropics influenced by family proximity

ScienceDaily (May 17, 2012) ? How species diversity is maintained is a fundamental question in biology. In a new study, a team of Indiana University biologists has shown for the first time that diversity is influenced on a spatial scale of unparalleled scope, in part, by how well tree seedlings survive under their own parents.

Data from over 3 million trees in the eastern half of the U.S. were aggregated into two-degree-latitude-by-longitude cells in order to study regional patterns of conspecific negative density dependence, a process where the mortality of a species rises in coincidence with its increasing abundance.

Scientists have long considered conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD), a process where the mortality of a species rises in coincidence with its increasing abundance, to be a key mechanism maintaining diversity at the local scale. In new research to be published May 17 in the journal Science, the IU researchers show that this mechanism is driving diversity from the boreal forests to sub-tropical forests.

The report, "Conspecific negative density dependence and forest diversity," is authored by Daniel Johnson, a doctoral student in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology. Co-authors are Wesley T. Beaulieu, also a doctoral student in the Department of Biology, and biology professors James D. Bever and Keith Clay, Johnson's major advisor.

Their work analyzed data on forest composition from over 200,000 plots containing more than 1.3 million trees and from paired plots containing over 1.7 million seedlings of 151 different tree species. The plots were located from the Canadian border south to Florida and from the Atlantic coast to the 100th meridian and covered over 1.5 million square miles. The U.S. Forest Service spends about $62 million each year to gather the publicly available forest inventory data used in the IU study.

"We are now able to provide robust evidence that CNDD is pervasive in forest communities from boreal to sub-tropical regions and that it can significantly affect the relative abundance and richness of species with and between forests," Johnson said. "And we now see that the ability to which one tree species can sustain itself in the same area has profound impacts on the diversity of species at a spatial scale that has not been attainable previously. This is the first time it's been shown to be happening not just at a local spatial scale but over the entire eastern US."

The concept of CNDD is based on the well-known Janzen-Connell hypothesis, which proposes that the close proximity of adults reduces seedling survival of that species through increased attack by host-specific pests and pathogens.

Studies of CNDD in the past have mostly focused on forest communities at single sites or of a single species, with the most recent work showing that in tree species, composition and abundance can be influenced by CNDD at the scale of individual trees.

"Local interactions have previously been considered to affect species diversity at a local scale, but our findings indicate that local interactions feed back to species richness and abundance over much larger geographical scale, spanning most of eastern North America," Johnson said.

Evidence that local interactions underlie regional species richness is in contrast to the current understanding that patterns of forest diversity are primarily driven by temperature, precipitation and other physical aspects of the environment. This discovery has implications for how forest modeling is conducted and conservation and management decisions are made.

While earnings calls are rarely the veritable dial-in party, sometimes they do toss up a juicy gambit or disappointing revelation. While NVIDIA was dishing out projections for Q1 2013, it pretty much quashed any hopes of seeing an in-house LTE Tegra chip in 2012. While we were assured that Tegra 3 LTE phones would come this year -- based on those partnerships announced back in February -- it was also stated that the thoroughbred Tegra LTE chip wouldn't be a reality until 2013. So, this pretty much ties in with what we had heard, but this time, from the horse's mouth.
