Mexican judge orders arrest of ex-governor on drug charges

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican federal judge has ordered the arrest of former state Governor Tomas Yarrington on suspicion of aiding drug traffickers, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Yarrington, a former Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) governor of Tamaulipas, has been a thorn in the side of the PRI since allegations surfaced this year he had worked with drug cartels.

The centrist PRI, which ruled Mexico between 1929 and 2000, is due to return to power in December after the party's candidate, Enrique Pena Nieto, won a July 1 presidential election.

The PRI's long rule was tainted by allegations of corruption and making deals with drug gangs, which have ravaged Mexico over the past six years despite the efforts of conservative President Felipe Calderon to bring them to heel.

Yarrington, who governed the northern border state of Tamaulipas between 1999 and 2005, is suspected of accepting cash from drug cartels and using it to buy real estate in Texas.

Mexican Attorney General Marisela Morales said the order had been issued for his capture but noted the whereabouts of the 55-year-old Yarrington were currently unknown.

Yarrington, who was suspended from the PRI in May, is already facing related suits in the United States.

In May, two civil lawsuits were brought against Yarrington in a U.S. federal court, accusing him of "using his illicit income from his political years to become a major real estate investor" in the United States.

Tamaulipas, across the Rio Grande from Texas, is one of the country's most violent drug trafficking corridors, and home the Gulf Cartel and its former enforcers, the brutal Zetas gang.

Yarrington in June denied the accusations, saying they were being used to discredit the PRI in the run-up to the election. However, PRI officials chided Yarrington, saying he should face the accusations in the United States.

60+ Lessons from the 2012 Midwest Performance Enhancement ...

Our 2012 Midwest Performance Enhancement Seminar was a lot of fun and full of some really smart people. Here?s a slice of what I learned this past weekend from some of the best in the industry. Enjoy!

Lee Taft

Movement should be reflexive.

Consider adductor eccentric loading to prevent groin strains from hip abduction.

Playing tag is a great teacher of movement.

I screwed athletes up over the years because I talk too much!

If you?re always training deceleration, you?re doing a disservice to the speed and quickness your athletes need.

Good dorsiflexion is critical for proper deceleration.

When cutting, don?t let the shoulder get outside the plant foot.

Bill Hartman

Posture will define how you breathe, and breathing will determine your posture.

If you don?t want to wet your pants when you cough or sneeze, you need a strong pelvic floor.

Proper diaphragmatic function and alignment helps decompress the discs.

Improper respiration shifts you into glycolytic metabolism faster.

If you?re teaching breathing without ribcage movement, you?re doing it wrong.

Don?t stretch the shoulder until you know the position of the t-spine and ribcage.

The most common breathing pattern disorder is upper chest/apical breathing.

Females suffer from breathing pattern disorders more than men. The ratio can be anywhere from twice to seven times as likely!

Fix breathing to relax the hip flexors ? NOW activate your glutes.

How do most of your clients create spinal stability? They crush their spine.

If you?re a one-trick pony, when the market changes you?re in big trouble.

Having multiple streams of income makes you recession-resistant.

A kettlebell is like a pencil; low tech serving a high concept.

Humans are social animals that require leadership. As such, someone must become the leader.

Traveling strongmen & professional wrestlers trained with and performed with kettlebells.

Resistance training changed the appearance of the body very quickly ? this was the beginning of bodybuilding.

The 3 individuals most responsible for kettlebells in America? Pavel, Dan Duchane, and Valery Fedorenko.

?Power to the People? by Pavel was a game changer with regard to kettlebell training.

To commemorate the victims of 9/11, Valery Fedorenko did 911 one-arm jerks with a 70-pound kettlebell.

The continuum of kettlebell training spans from Hardstyle/RKC techniques to soft-style which focuses on strength-endurance.

The kettlebell swing pattern becomes the KB snatch and the KB clean.

The goal of soft-style kettlebell training is to minimize tension and fatigue.

Kettlebells are revered in Russia for building work capacity.

Motor potential is the neuromuscular capacity to produce the greatest quantity of mechanical energy per unit time.

When we alter the internal environment, the body tries to restore homeostasis. This is training.

There are two types of stress response: The general response and the specific response.

Periodization is nothing more than an organizational plan.

Periodization is how you organize all the different variables to create the long-term training process.

Block training is not appropriate or necessary for beginners or intermediate-level lifters.

When you train competing qualities, you stay in the middle and don?t progress on either.

You MUST look at the long-term effects of your programming, not just the short-term changes.

Heart rate variability measures acute and cumulative.

"HOODED GREBE PROJECT", VOLUNTEER PROGRAM 2012-2013. The project started in Santa Cruz, Patagonia, Argentina in 2008 and in January 2009 our first searches uplands begun. Since then, we have been working nonstop every year, amassing a good amount of knowledge about the species, conservation problems, environment, the gaps in the biological knowledge of the species and the people involved in the story. The project is not only focused in gathering much needed data on the grebe but also putting in place actions that help recover population numbers. The Project is carried by a group of institutions NGO's Aves Argentinas/BirdLife Int. & Ambiente Sur and the CONICET with the University of Buenos Aires. Several other organizations provide extra support, among them Fundaci?n Flora y Fauna Argentina, Canadian Wildlife Service, CREOI, A.V. Jensen Charity Fund. Profile of the volunteers: The main asset we look for in people wanting to volunteer time to the project is a genuine interest in conservation and/or research. It is also important they have a passion for nature and adventure. We don't necessarily look for people with a degree but for those who have shown interest and passion for learning and have something to add to the project. The environment we work in is extreme, with winds that can blow over 100 kilometers an hour and a temperature range from several below to 30 plus Celsius and intense exposure to radiation and low humidity. Volunteers must be prepared both physically and mentally for working in these conditions as many times the tasks can't be delayed. We consider fundamental a good disposition, sense of humor and a proactive attitude because long periods of time are sometimes spent in the field with no access to toilets or showers, camping near a protective bunch of rocks among other things. Tasks: Some of the activities we will do in the field are: - Census of aquatic Birds and shorebirds. - Data Collection in Hooded Grebe colonies. - Hooded Grebe trapping and marking. - Monitoring of invasive species like Mink and Kelp Gull. - Assisting the 'guardians' of the colonies in the detection and control of factor affecting that particular colony. - Development and deployment of direct conservation measures (such us wind stoppers devices, artificial nests, etc.). - Monitoring of other fauna (mammals, reptiles). - Provide help with the maintenance of field work equipment. - Environmental education. Conditions: Since the activities to be developed in the field are of a varying nature it is important that you express you area of interest beforehand. At any case, many of the activities are carried sometimes in a parallel way meaning you would be able to add and help in all the different aspects of the project. The minimum volunteering time is 15 days. Your expenses will be covered completely once you have arrived to Santa Cruz province, including food and lodging during working and resting days. Should you be able to spend 30 days or more we would be able to provide transportation to and from Buenos Aires (assuming this is your entrance point to Argentina). Field work runs from 1 Dec 2012 until 15 Apr 2013 with short rest intervals (2-3 days) usually in places like Perito Moreno, El Calafate or El Chalt?n. This is a long term project hence volunteers have chances of growing in their rich once they have been accepted. Volunteers with novel ideas, an interest to develop a thesis for a masters or a future PhD will be favored. In this sense, we have several research ideas we could point you to. Given the sometimes rough weather conditions mentioned previously and sometimes hard physical activity (a day?s walk of around 20 kilometers is common) aside from being in good shape you should also have good quality personal equipment (clothing, sleeping bag and personal items) capable of withstanding these conditions. Good first aid knowledge is also favored. Spanish is the main language but English is spoken by most of the people involved in the project. To apply: Please send us: - Intention letter briefly describing your main interest to participate, - A support letter from anybody related to conservation and fieldwork, - CV. Applications will be received until 1 October 2012. Contact (queries and applications): IGNACIO ROESLER (EM: roesler AT?ege.fcen.uba.ar?or kiniroesler AT?gmail.com), Laboratorio de Ecologia y Comportamiento Animal, Departamento de Ecologia, Genetica y Evoluci?n, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires (URL:http://www.avesargentinas.org.ar).

How Ann Romney learned to stop worrying and love politics

TAMPA--When the three major news networks announced last week that they would not air Ann Romney's Republican National Convention Monday night speech in Tampa, Republicans started scrambling. Romney's likeable wife of 43 years needed a primetime spot, they decided, and party leaders were reportedly ready to bump the popular Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to make that happen. Eventually, they moved New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's appearance to another night so that Ann could steal the spotlight on Tuesday. Meanwhile, party officials denied they had ever considered dumping Rubio.

This last minute jockeying is a testament to just how vital the campaign considers Ann to her husband's election efforts, something that wasn't always the case over the course of Romney's political career. Back in 1994, during Romney's failed U.S. Senate bid (and first run for office), the new political spouse on the block was a gaffe-prone potential liability without the polish or PR skills to handle the press. But over the years, Ann has learned how to spin family tales into political catnip--wooing voters by offering a dimension to her husband that no one else has seen before?and becoming a smooth and competent politician in her own right.

The 63-year-old mother of five and grandmother to 16 has emerged as an important humanizing force for Romney on the campaign trail. While the presumptive Republican nominee can come across as stiff and awkward on the stump, Ann charms the crowd with personal stories, casting her husband in a softer light. At a rally in Michigan on Friday she choked up while expressing gratitude that so many supporters in her home state had shown up. "Mitt and I grew up here, we fell in love here, and this is a special place for us," she said.

Despite her ongoing struggle with multiple sclerosis, which she was diagnosed with in 1998, Ann has attended hundreds of campaign events and often comes across as having more energy on the stump than her husband. She was at her husband's side at virtually every rally during the long primary?working the rope line alongside her spouse and often delivering a mini stump speech of her own.

In one instance, she tells the story of being a stay-at-home mom in charge of five "very naughty" sons when her husband, then a consultant with Bain Capital, was traveling. "He would call home, and he'd hear a very exasperated wife at the end of the phone," Ann said during a rally in South Carolina in January. "And he'd remind me to hang in there. It would be okay, that actually my job was more important than his job. And the cool thing was he meant it."

"You couldn't pay me to do this again"

Ann now seems so skilled and smooth in interviews it's hard to believe that she is actually something of a comeback kid, politically speaking.

During her husband's unsuccessful bid for a Massachusetts Senate seat, the Boston Globe blasted her in a scorched-earth profile that portrayed her as a chatty, over-privileged woman living a life so perfect it bordered on creepy. The two lines from the interview that most haunted the campaign: Ann's insistence that she and her Ken-doll-looking husband had never once had a fight during their marriage; and her statement that the couple was "struggling" when Mitt was getting his graduate degrees at Harvard. The two were supporting themselves by selling off American Motors stock given to Mitt by his wealthy father?something that didn't exactly resonate with voters working two jobs to survive. ("Mitt was still in school and we had no income except the stock we were chipping away at. We were living on the edge, not entertaining. No, I did not work. Mitt thought it was important for me to stay home with the children, and I was delighted," she said at the time.)

In an article titled "Daughter of Privilege Knows Little of Real World," the Boston Herald ripped off the most unflattering of the Globe's quotes. The experience left Ann incredibly angry, she later admitted. When a reporter asked her after her husband's defeat whether she would ever help him launch another race, she retorted: "Never. You couldn't pay me to do this again."

Writer Ron Scott, a Mormon who wrote MITT ROMNEY: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics and who lived in the same stake?sort of the Mormon version of a diocese?as the Romneys, said he remembers "gasping" when he first read the Globe profile, instantly recognizing it as a disaster. But now, Scott thinks the incident just shows how fully Romney trusted his wife?for good or for bad. Despite her political inexperience, her husband was willing to let Ann do an hour-long one-on-one interview without media training or a PR team to hold her hand. And Ann was happy to take that risk, confident she could come out on top.

Perhaps that assurance was misplaced at the time, but it seems fitting now.

"She looks...like she's enjoying the campaign," Scott said. "I think if you were to contrast between now and '94, I don't think she really enjoyed that campaign or the 2008 one, but this time around I think she really looks like she's come alive."

The happy homemaker

Romney often introduces Ann as his "sweetheart" on the trail. The two began dating when she was 16 and he 18 in the ritzy Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills. Ann's father, an immigrant from Wales, had made his fortune and served as the town's mayor. Romney, the son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, "hotly pursued" her, she said later. After a year at Stanford and two years of a Mormon mission in France, Romney rushed home and proposed to Ann, who had converted to Mormonism under Gov. Romney's tutelage and was attending Brigham Young University in Utah.

Ann eventually finished her undergraduate degree in French in 1975, when she already had two children. She recalled in an interview with People magazine that she shocked a professor at Harvard's extension school--where she took some classes at night while Mitt attended grad school--for needing to nurse one of her children in the back of the lecture hall. "It's one of those things where the professor is like, 'Wait, wait, wait, this is liberal Harvard, but what am I going to do about that woman in the back with a baby that's nursing?' He just kept pretending like I wasn't there," she recalled. Though she saw the Beatles perform live in Detroit and was a child of the 60s, Ann was a bit of rebel in reverse for wanting to settle down and have children instead of pursuing a career. She's said she felt judged sometimes by peers, but never regretted her decision.

During the campaign in April, she used a Democratic strategist's attack on her for never "working a day in her life" to portray Democrats as judgmental and dismissive of mothers, a powerful counterattack to the Democratic argument that Republicans were waging a "war on women." The comments sent Democrats into a tailspin, with no less than President Barack Obama himself going on TV to say, "There's no tougher job than being a mom" within a day of the comments. Ann later called the attack "an early birthday gift" in comments that were captured by a hot mic, inadvertently showing off her tough-as-nails political instincts.

Team Romney

When speaking about Romney's bid, Ann frequently uses the "we" or the "Mitt and I" construction, emphasizing just how invested in the campaign she actually is. She's not just selling Mitt on the stump--she's selling them both as a team.

"Mitt and I are in an unusual position right now to make a difference to the future of this nation," she told a rally in West Charleston, S.C., in January.

Then, two weeks ago, she said to NBC: "I don't think he could do it without me. I don't believe he could."

Her willingness to take on the mantle of surrogate is somewhat surprising for a woman who has often aired her misgivings about opening up her private life and whom the Boston Globe described as largely "invisible" in Massachusetts as first lady when her husband was governor. Even now, when traveling on her own, Ann rarely tells people she meets on planes her true identity; she prefers to say vaguely that she works in public relations.

Technically, she's not lying. During the primaries, when Romney had a tense relationship with his traveling press corps, Ann would venture back on the candidate's plane to chat with reporters?offering up a friendlier face to the pack of wolves press than her hunted husband.

After a disastrous event in South Carolina when Romney was photographed with one of the smallest crowds he's ever attracted on the trail, Ann wandered off the bus and stood with reporters awaiting a gaggle with the candidate.

"What kind of jeans are you wearing?" she jokingly shouted, as her husband took the mic?a reference to a brief media obsession over whether the candidate was sporting "skinny" jeans on the campaign trail. Her husband grinned.

On the campaign plane, Ann always shares a row with her husband. He reads his iPad, while she's been spotted flipping through issues of US Weekly. He has said her presence keeps him calm. "If I'm away from Ann for longer than a week or so, I get off course," Romney told CNN's Piers Morgan. "She has to bring me back and moderate me down a bit."

But Ann's sunny disposition has faltered as negative attacks on her family's wealth and character intensified over the summer. While she's continued to be one of her husband's strongest assets on the stage, Ann has largely ceased her plane-side chats with reporters trailing her husband across the country.

Advisers who declined to be named discussing the candidate's wife said Ann was deeply wounded by the British tabloid attacks in July over her husband's comments suggesting he found London's Olympic preparations "disconcerting." (The Sun tabloid called him "Mitt the Twit" in retaliation, and the gaffe threatened to overshadow Romney's foreign tour.)

More recently, her hackles have been up over demands that her husband release more years of his tax returns. Ann was noticeably agitated in an interview with NBC's Natalie Morales two weeks ago when asked about the financial disclosures.

"Have you seen how we are attacked? Have you seen what's happened?" she said, leaning forward in her chair. "We have been very transparent to what's legally required of us. But the more we release, the more we get attacked, the more we get questioned, the more we get pushed. And so we have done what's legally required, and there's going to be no more tax releases given."

Besides fighting back in interviews, Ann has grown more aggressive on the stump as well. The announcement of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc) as Romney's running mate has breathed new life into the campaign, drawing larger crowds to Romney's events. Joining her husband and Ryan on stage at a rally in Mooresville, N.C., earlier this month, she marveled at the size of the crowd that had turned out, which was estimated to be at least 4,000 people.

"They know America is in trouble and these are the guys who are going to save it," she said. "It's a boost that gives us determination to say we're not going to take it anymore! We're going to take the White House back!"

--Holly Bailey contributed to this report from the campaign trail.

Antibiotic residues in sausage meat may promote pathogen survival

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Antibiotic residues in uncured pepperoni or salami meat are potent enough to weaken helpful bacteria that processors add to acidify the sausage to make it safe for consumption, according to a study to be published in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, on August 28.

Sausage manufacturers commonly inoculate sausage meat with lactic-acid-producing bacteria in an effort to control the fermentation process so that the final product is acidic enough to kill pathogens that might have existed in the raw meat. By killing the bacteria that produce lactic acid, antibiotic residues can allow pathogenic bacteria to proliferate.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and University College Cork, Ireland, found that antibiotic concentrations within limits set by US and European Union (EU) regulators are high enough to slow fermentation, the process that acidifies the sausages and helps destroy foodborne pathogens like Salmonella or E. coli.

"At low concentrations and at regulatory levels set by authorities, we could see that the lactic acid bacteria are more susceptible to the antibiotics than the pathogens are," says Hanne Ingmer, of the University of Copenhagen, a researcher on the study. "So basically, we can have a situation where residual antibiotics in the meat can prevent or reduce fermentation by the lactic acid bacteria, but these concentrations do not effect survival or even multiplication of pathogens."

Antibiotics used as growth promoters or to treat disease in livestock can eventually end up in meat, and regulators in the US and EU have set limits on the concentrations of antibiotics in meat for consumption by humans. Ingmer and her colleagues set out to determine whether antibiotics falling within statutory limits might interfere with the process of fermentation in products like pepperoni, salami, or chorizo -- sausages that are fermented using lactic- acid-producing bacteria in a curing process many cultures have employed for hundreds of years. She says fermented sausages occasionally cause serious bacterial infections, but it's never been understood why that might be.

In small-scale experiments in the lab, Ingmer and her colleagues added the antibiotics oxytetracycline or erythromycin to meat inoculated with lactic-acid-producing bacteria and pathogens Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica. They followed the progress of the fermentation and tracked the survival of the pathogens. Ingmer says several different starter cultures of lactic-acid-producing bacteria were sensitive to these antibiotics and hence did not acidify the sausage meat effectively -- results that could explain why people sometimes get sick from eating fermented sausage.

Ingmer says the results show antibiotics can potentially have a paradoxical effect that would increase the risk of foodborne illness: antibiotic residues reduce the effectiveness of bacteria that should make the sausages safe but don't affect the bacteria that can cause illness.

Although the results raise an alarm for the manufacture of processed meats, Ingmer stresses that it is important to conduct similar tests in manufacturing facilities. "The majority of sausages are manufactured at a commercial scale. It has to be addressed whether this is a problem in a real life facility," Ingmer says.

Manufacturers with good quality control systems can catch problems in fermentation, Ingmer says, preventing large-scale outbreaks of foodborne illness by testing the final product before it's distributed, but random batch testing could well miss a batch that didn't ferment properly, putting the public at risk.

How can we be sure antibiotic residues don't interfere with the safety of these products? Ingmer sees two possible solutions. If antibiotics are present in meat, boosting the survival and activity of the lactic-acid-producing bacteria is important. In the future, Ingmer hopes to work with manufacturers to develop cultures of lactic-acid-producing bacteria that tolerate low levels of antibiotics.

But the ultimate solution to the problem of antibiotics in meat may be harder to achieve. "The obvious solution is to eliminate the use of antibiotics as growth promoters and closely monitor the use of antibiotics in treating farm animal diseases," Ingmer says. The European Union and other countries have banned the use of antibiotics in livestock as growth promoters, Ingmer points out, a move the US is unlikely to follow very soon.

Pupil Mortgage Choices For Financing Your Education ? The Flower ...

27 August 12 ??|?? 8:47 am ??|?? Category: 86

Whenever you start applying for schools, you will see that tuition and boarding fees are extraordinarily expensive. Until they?re independently wealthy, few folks will pay for faculty outright. If you do not qualify for scholarships, financing your training can seem just about inconceivable, even with the help of normal monetary assist grants. Nonetheless, there are lots of low interest scholar loans obtainable for college kids that qualify for them. Quite than pushing aside your training, you can borrow cash and defer cost until your have graduated and have discovered a full-time job with which you can pay back what you owe.

The first step toward making use of for pupil loans is to fill out a monetary help utility kind known as the Federal Application for Student Monetary Aid. After you have been accepted to a school or college, you?ll be despatched a packet of economic help information. You can be asked to provide your personal and your dad and mom financial data so the help agency can assess your want and your potential to pay. There are many authorities based grants, just like the Pell Grant, that give cash to low-revenue college students and their families with no obligation to ever pay it back. Nonetheless, grants can only pay for so much, and you?ll most probably require scholar loans to finance the rest of your instructional expenses.

If the free monetary support you qualify for isn?t sufficient to cover your bills, student loans can assist you make it by way of school to get the degree you could be financially profitable later in life. There are a lot of several types of student loans out there for both typical and nontraditional students. Federal schooling loans like Perkins and Stafford Loans will be funded by either the school, your financial institution, or by the U.S. Department of Education. Private education loans usually are not sponsored by the government and draw funds from a variety of completely different sources. If you are nonetheless thought-about a dependent, either you or your parents can apply for pupil loans to finance your education.

Guaranteed Student Loans, or Stafford Loans, sometimes have decrease interest rates than personal loans. These loans are assured by the federal authorities, and they can be sponsored or unsubsidized. You probably have a sponsored mortgage, the government pays your curiosity while you are in school. With an unsubsidized mortgage, you begin accruing interest when you are in class, but you would not have to pay it back till you have got graduated. You will need to present financial have to get hold of a backed mortgage, whereas unsubsidized loans are available to anyone who applies.

Usually instances, Direct Scholar Loans are the mortgage of alternative for many students. Direct loans are dealt with instantly by the varsity you?re attending. These kinds of loans sometimes have lower interest rates than most others. Your school or college might acquire the funds from quite a lot of sources, but all the payments are typically made to the varsity itself. As soon as you might be completed with faculty, you usually have anyplace from six to nine months to start paying again your accrued debt.

In the event you end school and cannot afford to pay again your pupil loans, they may be positioned in default. This affects your credit standing and can hold you from getting different loans within the future. You may be granted a deferment on your loans for those who determine to continue your education in graduate research, or if you are unemployed. Deferment, however, does not final forever. When you?ve got many different student loans, you can usually consolidate them using a consolidation service, or, you probably have direct loans, you can consolidate by your colleges lender.

New wave of technologies possible after ground-breaking analysis tool for nanometer devices developed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? The nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus -- developed by the University's Department of Physics and Astronomy -- will allow for further developments and new applications for nanotechnology which is increasingly used in harvesting solar energy, computing, communication developments and also in the medical field.

Scientists can now analyse nanostructures at an unprecedented level of detail without destroying the materials in the process, a limitation researchers across the world faced before the Sheffield experts' breakthrough.

Dr Alexander Tartakovskii, who led a team of researchers, said: "We have developed a new important tool for microscopy analysis of nanostructures. In the very tiny quantities of matter used in nanostructures the behaviour of electrons and photons is governed by new quantum effects, quite different from what happens in bulk materials. This makes them attractive for various new technologies.

"Development requires careful structural analysis, in order to understand how the nanostructures are formed, and how we can build them to enhance and control their useful properties. Existing structural analysis methods, key for the research and development of new materials, are invasive: a nanostructure would be irreversibly destroyed in the process of the experiment, and, as a result, the important link between the structural and electronic or photonic properties would usually be lost. This limitation is now overcome by our new techniques, which rely on inherently non-invasive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probing."

The results open a new way of nano-engineering, a full characterisation of a new material and new semiconductor nano-device without destroying them meaning more research and development and device fabrication processes.

Dr Tarakovskii added: "We have developed new techniques which allowed unprecedented sensitivity and enhancement of the NMR signal in nanostructures. Particular nanostructures of interest in our research are semiconductor quantum dots, which are researched widely for their promising photonic applications, and potential for the use in a new type of computer hardware employing quantum logic.

"The result of our experiments was quite unexpected and changed our understanding of the architecture of these nanomaterials: we learned new information about the chemical composition of quantum dots, and also how atom alignment inside the dots deviates from that of a perfect crystal. Importantly, many more measurements of optical and magnetic properties can be done on the same quantum dots which have undergone the NMR probing."

The development of the new techniques and all experimental work was carried out by Dr Evgeny Chekhovich in the group of Dr Alexander Tartakovskii at the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Sheffield. Quantum dot samples used in this work have also been fabricated in Sheffield, in the EPSRC National Facility for III-V Semiconductor Technology.

Cool Fantasy Football Team Names

Cool Fantasy Football Team Names like this earn 5 Stars in my book! We've previously touched on what goes into the process of creating a good fantasy football name for your squad. A name must be original, unique, and humorous and, perhaps most importantly, must reflect on who you are as a person/coach. By that I mean a team name should give others - including rival coaches - an idea of what kind of person you are.

I've selected just a handful of my personal favourite names. I hope that these, in additional to my titles, offer you the right amount of inspiration to creative something of your own which is equally, or perhaps even more, brilliant!

  • The 40 Year Old Viking
  • is a name that is clearly a tip of the hat to the infamously popular, movie' The 40 Year Old Virgin.' I think the reason I consider this to be one of the cool fantasy football team names is because it doesn't feel the need to fall into the trap that most fantasy names do in terms of selecting offense terminology.

The team's head coach is clearly a movie fan, has a great sense of humour and is passionate about his favourite team: the Vikings. It ticks every box and is clever enough that you're likely to get a chuckle out of it when you read it. It's close to perfect in my book!

    Reasons To Rent Construction Equipment

With the recent downfall of the world economy, it is not really surprising that a great number of businesses had to close their doors. For this reason, a lot of employees have lost their jobs thus the demand for particular products and services has decreased greatly. However, if there is one type of business that still remains strong despite the crisis, it is the construction industry.

The main reason how construction firms are able to stay afloat is the fact the need for affordable houses has very much increased as people needed to find ways to make the most out of the amount that they are currently making. However, the main dilemma now lies with real estate developers that need to come up with ways on how they would be able to build affordable housing units without compromising the quality of the workmanship and materials used for the house. One of the most effective ways to do this is by renting the construction equipment they need.

Business owners do this because for one, they don?t have to worry about the amount of money they would need to shell out just to be able to use machines for their building projects. The second reason is that this practice allow construction firm owners the opportunity to prepare well before they make a construction machine purchase. This means that business owners get the opportunity to improve the other aspects of their operations because they can fund it with the money that was supposed to go into buying construction machines.

Aside from the fact that rental equipment can give you more leg room in terms of the finances for your business, there are other benefits as well. One of these is the fact that business owners won?t have to be bothered by maintenance costs and repairs that heavy equipment ownership entails. The rental companies take care of this aspect before they release the construction equipment rental units to their clients Rental companies always make it point to check that the unit is fully functional before they deliver it to the project sites of their customers. Furthermore, repairs are shouldered by the rental company and in case the unit breaks down, a repairman or a replacement is sent right away. This minimizes the amount of time wasted due to downtimes. Heavy equipment rentals are affordable enough to allow small scale businesses the opportunity to take advantage of the convenience that these machines bring.

Furthermore, construction firms with not much capital have the chance to own different types of heavy equipment without needing to come up with large sums of money right away. HertzEquip is one of those rental companies that offer rent to own contracts for their clients. This type of arrangement is beneficial for small and medium scale construction firms because they no longer need to put up a down payment for the equipment and their payment for rent already covers costs for maintenance, repairs, as well as the premium for the payment of the machine. Business owners who choose to sign up for this type of agreement should look for a rental company that is willing to negotiate the terms of the contract so that both parties can benefit well from such a venture.

Dueling headlines: Candidates, conventions and cancer

    **Written by Doug Powers

    We all remember this headline:

    null

Bottom line: Elect Mitt Romney? if you want to get cancer!

Which leads us to this headline:

    null

What do you think about that, Priorities USA? Priorities USA? Hello??

As they say, you can?t make this stuff up:

On Tuesday, September 4th, the DNC will officially kick off. Tens of thousands from around the world will head to the Queen City and there?s no secret, the convention will have a major impact locally, including on people battling cancer.

Matthews resident Sue Falco is fighting stage four colon cancer, and says the DNC will force a major cancer treatment center to close. Carolina?s Hematology Oncology Associates on South Tryon will close for four days during the DNC, because of security and traffic concerns.

Carolina?s Hematology Oncology Associates will have two other locations open around Mecklenburg County during the DNC. An employee says South Tryon patients will be able to receive treatment at the two other locations.

?I?m very fortunate that I can drive myself to and from chemotherapy but I know a lot of people depend on family members who have to drive a distance to get to their therapy,? she said.

    Damn that Bain Capital!

    The Free Beacon adds:

Democrats are arranging transportation for those who wish to view Obama?s speech. It is unclear if Democrats will also arrange transportation for the displaced cancer patients receiving critical treatments for their life-threatening conditions.

It?s a good thing this happened because of the Democrats? convention and not the Repulicans or else somebody?s health might have been put in jeopardy:
