Galleries spite Sandy to show at Art Basel Miami

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy almost kept roughly 50 New York City art galleries from participating in Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the world's most prestigious contemporary art fairs, officials said.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the 11th annual Art Basel Miami Beach, the U.S. extension of the contemporary art fair held each June in Basel, Switzerland. A rum-running skeleton, red Lego pieces stacked into a starry flare and man-sized vampire fangs are among Picassos and thousands of other paintings, photographs and sculptures on display through Sunday.

New York's Chelsea gallery district is home to many of the 257 galleries participating in the main exhibitions that opened Thursday at the Miami Beach Convention Center, said Marc Spiegler, one of Art Basel's directors. The district was one of those areas hard hit when Superstorm Sandy blew into the Northeast in October with flood waters and high winds.

Some of the Chelsea galleries reported just minor water damage, while others lost everything they had in storage, Spiegler said. Still, none skipped the four-day fair.

"Our fear was, not so much that we would have an empty booth, because that's something we can deal with, but just that the implication would be that if you didn't do Art Basel, it would be because you were going out of business," Spiegler said. "Obviously, that's what we were really afraid of: that (Sandy) would put people out of business, which so far it hasn't."

In conjunction with Art Basel, about two dozen other fairs also opened across Miami on Thursday with gimmicks that organizers hope will attract collectors, critics, charitable donors and partygoers. A Bugatti has become a drivable painting, a menacing dog looms over a South Beach hotel and a scattering of Steinway pianos have been transformed by teams of artists for pop-up concerts.

The Miami art season has developed into a see-and-be-seen event as luxury brands and celebrities have sponsored or been featured in an increasing number of independent fairs and exhibitions.

Not all the stars want to be treated as such, though. "Artist! Artist -- not a celebrity!" Julian Lennon playfully yelled at a friend who had referred to the musician and photographer as "a unique celebrity."

The son of the late Beatles legend John Lennon has about a dozen landscapes in a show titled "Alone" at the Overture Art Fair.

"It's basically about having that moment in time where you can reflect, you can think about life, think of the past and present and future. It's that moment in time when you have a bit of peace," Lennon said about the photographs he shot while traveling between music and charity projects.

Lennon also exhibited his photography during the 2010 art fairs, and he was looking forward to enjoying Miami's social scene. "You get every kind of character and every kind of style," he said. "I just hope that doesn't detract from the actual work of the artists who've come here."

Away from the velvet ropes and celebrity glare, many public art installations offer culture for free.

Street artists, including Shepard Fairey, have painted colorful new works onto the exteriors of the warehouses of the Wynwood district. Red, blue and green resin alligators crawl up the yellow facade of Miami's Freedom Tower to raise awareness for Florida's environmental issues.

There's even a kind of scavenger hunt. Over the last two years, the French artist Invader has installed more than 70 mosaics of space alien figures throughout Miami, and maps to each spaceman's location will supplement an exhibit of his new work in the Jonathan LeVine Gallery booth at the Pulse Miami fair.

Observatory: Early Mediterranean Settlers Ate Little Seafood

Sicilian cuisine is famous for the bounty of the Mediterranean: fish, clams, mussels, shrimp. But 20,000 years ago, around the time of the last ice age, the first modern humans who arrived in the region ate very little seafood, researchers report after studying the remains of human skeletons.

?The source of the dietary protein consumed mainly originated from the meat of medium to large terrestrial herbivores,? said the report?s first author, Marcello Mannino, an archaeologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany.

The remains were found in a cave on the small island of Favignana, which thousands of years ago was part of Sicily. Sicily itself was connected to the mainland by a land bridge, allowing humans to cross over.

Dr. Mannino and his colleagues did an isotopic analysis of the remains to determine what the settlers were eating. They reported their findings in the journal PLoS One.

By the time they arrived in Sicily, modern humans had yet to develop sophisticated fishing techniques. Moreover, Dr. Mannino said, the Mediterranean is an enclosed sea, poor in nutrients compared with oceanic regions. By now, he continued, overfishing has taken its toll on the sea?s marine resources.

?Modern fishing methods essentially wipe out anything that is present in a given area and then essentially destroy the sea bottom,? he said.

I'm Bradford Shellhammer, Founder of Fab, and This Is How I Work

I'm Bradford Shellhammer, Founder of Fab, and This Is How I WorkSince launching in June 2011, Fab.com has become the internet's fastest growing e-commerce site. It's captured more than 9 million users with its yes-you-can-afford-it prices and constantly changing lineup of design products. From neon Baroque-style chairs and sequined party dresses to midcentury lamps and framed prints of sloths (yes!), Fab aims to offer a little something for everyone. The company's founder and chief design officer, Bradford Shellhammer, is Fab personified?whimsical, inspirational, and wickedly funny. Needless to say, the past year has been a crazy one for him, and he's picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. We caught a moment out of Bradford's schedule to find out the best ones.

Name: Bradford Shellhammer
Occupation: Founder and Chief Design Officer at Fab
Location: New York, NY
Current computer: 13" MacBook Pro Retina
Current mobile device: iPhone 5
I work: Loudly

What's your best time-saving shortcut/life hack?

Working lunches! Fab was formed over a dinner table, so I think work more passionately and efficiently with food. I'd be lying if I said I relaxed during lunch?it's the height of the day and the end of the day in our Berlin office, so during that time I'm usually in a meeting with the team chowing down or having a more leisurely lunch with a client. Either way, there's no downtime: I work straight through the day, and I think that helps me stay on point, save time, focus, and get shit done.

What apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Evernote. It keeps me organized.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

My Alessi corkscrew. It's the most important gadget in the world!

What's your workspace setup like?

My office at Fab is full of my favorite products we've featured on the site, plus a colorful selection of snacks and candy, and a big red pog by Molla Space?that holds all my magazines in its mouth. The left side of my office opens up into a conference room that Jason, our CEO, shares. He's on the other side of the conference room, and we can keep the doors open to be in touch with one another throughout the day. My desktop itself is pretty minimal?just my laptop, monitor, notepad, and pens. Also, AMAC containers set for business cards and other little things. But even though that's my favorite space to work in, I'm back and forth between NYC, Berlin, and India constantly, so my office is really wherever my laptop is.?

Pictured above: Colorful odds and ends in Bradford's office.

What do you listen to while you work?

I listen to clich? gay music: Erasure, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys?that kind of stuff. I try to listen to new music, but my heart won't let me leave 1992.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

I have two. The old fashioned way: I keep a notebook and clear off and rewrite my list daily. I also use Evernote for receipts, travel plans, important passwords, and inspirations.

What's your sleep routine like?

I'm in bed by 11PM and up at 6:30AM every day to head to the gym like clockwork. I'm an early riser with no need for an alarm.

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?

I am better at laughing than everyone else. I always see the humor in things?heck, we've built a business around it!

Pictured above: Fab's NYC office.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Once my mom told me: Only you can embarrass yourself. That really freed me. And Madonna said: Poor is the man whose pleasure depends on the permission of another. I like that one. Oh! And Auntie Mame said: Life is a banquet and most suckers are starving.? Basically, they were all saying the same thing?eat at the trough of life and don't give a shit what the other animals are thinking. I love that.

Is there anything else you'd like to add for readers?

Watch Auntie Mame, if you have not! It will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

Note: you can connect with Bradford on Twitter @youngbradford.

Eric Schmidt: 'it's extremely curious' that Apple hasn't yet sued Google

Eric Schmidt 'it's extremely curious' that Apple hasn't yet sued Google

Google's roving uncle, Eric Schmidt, has sat down with the Wall Street Journal to talk about life and times at Mountain View. When asked about the ongoing saga between Apple and Android manufacturers, Schmidt said "it's extremely curious that Apple has chosen to sue Google's partners and not Google itself." However, rather than an invitation to a back-alley knife-fight, it seems the company chairman is hoping for a peaceful solution to the pair's enmity. He also talks about the real loser in this global patent conflict -- anyone looking to set up their own device company to follow in the footsteps of Android's daddy, Andy Rubin.
