BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund wants euro zone finance ministers to agree to cut Greece's debt by 20 percent of GDP now and commit to further debt reduction in the future to get the country's finances back on a sustainable path, a source familiar with EU-IMF talks said on Monday.
An immediate 20 percentage-point cut, equal to 40 billion euros, could mostly be achieved through lowering interest rates and extending maturities on loans to Greece, the source said.
Finance ministers from the 17 countries sharing the euro, the European Central Bank and the IMF were locked in a third round of talks on Monday to decide how to make Greek debt, expected to rise to 190 percent of GDP next year, more sustainable by reducing it to 120 percent or below by 2020.
The IMF and the ministers are at odds on how to achieve the goal, with the IMF pushing for a bolder reduction of Greek debt through the forgiveness of some of the official loans to Athens which now make up the bulk of the country's obligations.
Greece's biggest creditor, Germany, opposes any debt forgiveness for Athens.
Without additional debt-cutting measures, Greek debt is likely to fall to only 144 percent of GDP in eight years - substantially above the 120 percent target. Many policy-makers see even the 120 percent as too high for Greece, which is in its fifth year of recession and set to contract again in 2013.
The IMF argues, the source said, that if there is no debt reduction up front, the Greek economy will not grow, nobody will invest and Greeks themselves will not spend, derailing other macro-economic assumptions of its adjustment program.
But Germany has said debt forgiveness would be illegal and the European Commission has said that a haircut on the principal lent to Athens is a red line for euro zone ministers.
The key to a compromise may be in keeping the principal intact.
One idea discussed by ministers is to keep the principal untouched but lower the interest on the official loans, either extended bilaterally or through the temporary bailout fund EFSF, to below market rates, and to extend maturities.
This could produce a reduction in debt big enough to make Greek debt sustainable, or close to sustainable.
Other available options include the European Central Bank forgoing profits on its Greek bond portfolio, a 10-year moratorium on debt servicing and a buy-back of privately held debt at a deep discount.
The source said the IMF insisted on a package of steps that would slash 20 percent of GDP off the debt pile up front to give the plan credibility and the Greek economy a chance to grow.
But it also expected the euro zone to promise a further reduction to a level well below 120 percent of GDP at some point in the future as a reward for keeping Greek reforms on track, the source said. That would have to involve debt forgiveness.
The IMF had made clear that it would not walk away from Greece, the source said, but also that it would not endorse a debt reduction deal that did not guarantee debt sustainability.
The IMF insists that any measures the ministers agree on, as well as assumptions in the Greek reform program, have to be credible enough for investors to see them as realistic, otherwise Greece would not be able to return to markets.

SEATTLE --?Despite a predicted increase in the number of holiday travelers, Americans returning home after the long Thanksgiving weekend found generally good weather, few airport delays and at times manageable conditions on the nation's highways.
Travel appeared to run smoothly Sunday ? typically the busiest travel day of the year ? as millions journeyed home after feasting with family and friends, even though there was little elbow room on packed buses, trains and airplanes.
Many travelers strategically hit the road early in the day or waited until much later to avoid possible bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Craig Haft, 57, left Cincinnati with his wife and daughter around 6:15 a.m. to drive to their home in Fairfax, Va., after visiting family. At midday, he reported smooth driving.
"It went fine on Wednesday and has been good so far today," he said.
Some were upbeat despite long journeys ahead. Andy Harbison, 38, said he didn't mind the 8-hour drive back to Harrisburg, Pa. after visiting family in Michigan.
The roads were good, he said, and he simply enjoyed being with family after being away from them during previous deployments to Iraq and Kuwait while in the National Guard.
Experts had predicted a slight rise in the number of people traveling this Thanksgiving weekend compared to last year. Some 43.6 million Americans were expected to journey 50 miles or more between Wednesday and Sunday, and more of them were likely to be driving while fewer were flying, according to AAA's yearly analysis.
Mauro Scappa and his wife, Chris, and their two children were among those who chose not to take to the skies. They braced themselves for delays as they waited at New York's Penn Station for a train back to Washington, near their home in Falls Church, Va. But their train was expected on time Sunday morning.
"We definitely wanted to avoid the airport on Thanksgiving weekend, for sure," Scappa said.
Renee Kerns, her husband Mike and their two children left about 30 minutes earlier than usual to catch a flight to home to California. They anticipated longer lines at the Washington-area Dulles International Airport, but sailed through security in about 10 minutes and were at their gate for their 8:30 a.m. flight to Oakland, Calif., more than an hour before their flight.
"It was fine," Renee Kerns said of getting through security. Added her husband: "Easy, but we're early."
Helped by dry weather and mostly clear skies, both O'Hare and Midway international airports in Chicago reported normal operations Sunday with no delays.
Leonard Reddick, 29, waited near downtown Chicago for a bus back to Flint, Mich. He traveled on Thanksgiving day to see his sister in the Chicago area, explaining that it's his trick for avoiding the huge crowds on the day before the holiday. He also liked the $84 roundtrip fare.
Reddick, who works at General Motors, was rethinking one decision as he was gearing up for the five-hour trip back home to Michigan: He had declined the turkey and mac and cheese leftovers because he thought it might mess up his luggage.
The tens of millions of holiday travelers also included a few thousand users of Megabus, the ultra-cheap inter-city network popular among students and the creative class. Shane Dillon, 26, a librarian now living and seeking work in Chicago, joined the throng waiting to board at Detroit's Rosa Parks Transit Center for the return trip to the Windy City. He was in the area visiting relatives in Allen Park, Mich.
"It was great to see family and friends. The food was good," Dillon said. A few days, though, was enough. "I'm glad to be going home."
Dense fog greeted travelers at Union Station in Los Angeles early Sunday, but it didn't appear to cause problems.
Mike Lansing, 63, and his wife Kay, 60, opted to take Amtrak for the first time to their home in the San Francisco Bay area after weighing high gas prices. They spent a week in LA with their daughter, son-in-law and new grandson.
He said he's relieved not to have to get behind the wheel. "I don't know if we're really saving any money, but it's an adventure!" said Kay Lansing.
At the Boise Airport, Charles Beyer, 59, waited for luggage after having just arrived from Portland, Ore., where he visited his son and daughter. He said he found most of his fellow passengers complacent about the challenges of traveling during the holiday weekend through packed airports.
"The good old days of pulling up to the curb and getting onto the airplane in five minutes are long gone," he said.

Turkish President Turgut Ozal, seen here in January 1993, died of heart failure in 1993. Recent tests on his exhumed body revealed evidence of poisoning, a newspaper reported Monday.
By Reuters
ISTANBUL ? An autopsy on the exhumed body late President Turgut Ozal, who led Turkey out of military rule in the 1980s, has revealed evidence of poisoning, a Turkish newspaper reported Monday.
There had long been rumors that Ozal, who died of heart failure in 1993 at the age of 65, was murdered by militants of the "deep state" ? a shadowy nationalist strain within the Turkish establishment of the day. He had angered some with his efforts to end the Kurdish conflict and survived an assassination bid in 1988.
His body, dug up last month on the orders of prosecutors investigating suspicions of foul play in his death, contained the banned insecticide DDT and the related compound DDE at ten times the normal level, Today's Zaman cited sources from the state Forensic Medicine Institute as saying.
?
More news from Europe on NBCNews.com
"Ozal was most likely poisoned with four separate substances," the paper reported the sources as saying, also naming the toxic metal cadmium and the radioactive elements americium and polonium as substances found in Ozal's remains.
Forensic institute officials declined to comment.
Dominant figure in Turkish politics in 1980s
Ozal, whose economic reforms easing the grip of the state on business helped shape modern Turkey, was in poor health. After undergoing a triple heart bypass operation in the United States in 1987, he kept up a grueling schedule and remained overweight until he died.
His moves to end a Kurdish insurgency and create a Turkic union with central Asian states have been cited as motives for would-be enemies in "deep state," in which security establishment figures and criminal elements colluded.
It was Turkey's military leaders who appointed him as a minister after a period of military rule following a 1980 coup.
He went on to dominate Turkish politics as prime minister from 1983 to 1989. Parliament then elected him president, but those close to him believe his reform efforts displeased some in the security establishment.
While prime minister, Ozal survived an assassination attempt by a right-wing gunman in 1988 when he was shot at a party congress, injuring a finger.

Frequent coups
Turkish political history has been littered with military coups, alleged anti-government plots and extra-judicial killings. A court is currently trying hundreds of people suspected of links to a nationalist underground network known as "Ergenekon" accused of plotting to overthrow the government.
A media report at the start of November said Ozal's autopsy had revealed high levels of the pesticide strychnine, but the ATK subsequently denied the report.
The head of the Forensic Medicine Institute?has said it aims to complete its work in December and that its report would be handed over to prosecutors.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained that he isn?t a huge fan of long gaps between new gaming consoles, according to Kotaku.
Although most people aren?t interested in spending a lot of money every few years for a brand new video game console, Guillemot explained that the gap is essentially bad for business. In fact, the Ubisoft CEO feels the longevity of the current generation may have ultimately harmed the industry.
?I think that what has happened is the transition has been very long,? Guillemot explained to Polygon. ?You know, in the industry, we were used to changing machines every five years. This time we are in the seventh year of the 360. We need new consoles and at the end of the cycle generally the market goes down because there are less new IPs, new properties, so that damaged the industry a little bit.?
He added, ?I hope next time they will come more often.?
Guillemot explained new consoles force game developers to try new things. Since a new console hasn?t come along in quite some time, the Ubisoft CEO feels that some designers are resting on their laurels by releasing sequel after sequel.
?When a console is out for a long time ? you don?t take as much risks on totally new IPs because even if they are good, they don?t sell as well,? he explained.
According to the Examiner, video game industry sales are down 25 percent. Since software developers aren?t willing to take a chance on new titles, many gamers are experiencing a problem generally associated with the motion picture business: sequelitis. Most of the top selling games released this holiday season are just new installments in previously-established franchises.
?Everybody who is taking risks and innovating is welcome because there are lots of hardcore gamers and those guys want new things, where the mass market will be more interested in having the same experience and doesn?t want to take as much risks because it?s not aware as much of what is going to change its experience. So, the beginning of the machines is always a good time for innovation,? Guillemot explained.
Do you agree with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot that long gaps between consoles is bad for the industry?

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell Monday as a truce between Israel and the militant group Hamas that stopped fighting in the Gaza Strip appeared to hold despite a confrontation late last week.
Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 33 cents to $87.95 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Friday, the contract rose 90 cents to close at $88.28 a barrel on the Nymex after Israeli troops fired on crowds in Gaza surging toward a border fence, killing one Palestinian.
Prior to the shooting, oil prices had been falling, thanks mostly to optimism that the cease-fire agreement between the two sides would prevent a broader conflict in the region that could disrupt crude supplies. The truce was struck last Wednesday to end to an eight-day Israeli offensive against Gaza militants who had fired rockets into Israel, but remains fragile.
Traders were also keeping a close eye on developments in Egypt, said independent oil analyst Stephen Schork. Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on Sunday moved to grant himself near-absolute power, sparking street clashes between his supporters and opponents.
Brent, which is used to set prices for many international varieties of oil, fell 33 cents to $111.05 a barrel.
Other futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange:
? Wholesale gasoline lost 0.2 cent to $2.719 a gallon.
? Natural gas lost 5 cents to $3.851 per 1,000 cubic feet.
? Heating oil was unchanged at $3.086 a gallon.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? The Florida sheriff's office that investigated the disappearance of Casey Anthony's 2-year-old daughter overlooked evidence that someone in their home did a Google search for "fool-proof" suffocation methods on the day the girl was last seen alive.
Orange County sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves said Sunday that the office's computer investigator missed a June 16, 2008, Google search for "fool-proof" suffocation methods. The agency's admission was first reported by Orlando television station WKMG. It's not known who performed the search. The station reported it was done on a browser primarily used by the 2-year-old's mother, Casey Anthony, who was acquitted of the girl's murder in 2011.
Anthony's attorneys argued during trial that Casey Anthony helped her father, George Anthony, cover up the girl's drowning in the family pool.
WKMG reports that sheriff's investigators pulled 17 vague entries only from the computer's Internet Explorer browser, not the Mozilla Firefox browser commonly used by Casey Anthony. More than 1,200 Firefox entries, including the suffocation search, were overlooked.
Whoever conducted the Google search looked for the term "fool-proof suffication," misspelling "suffocation," and then clicked on an article about suicide that discussed taking poison and putting a bag over one's head.
The browser then recorded activity on the social networking site MySpace, which was used by Casey Anthony but not her father.
A computer expert for Anthony's defense team found the search before the trial. Her lead attorney, Jose Baez, first mentioned the search in his book about the case but suggested it was George Anthony who conducted the search after Caylee drowned because he wanted to kill himself.
Not knowing about the computer search, prosecutors had argued Caylee was poisoned with chloroform and then suffocated by duct tape placed over her mouth and nose. The girl's body was found six months after she disappeared in a field near the family home and was too decomposed for an exact cause of death to be determined.
Prosecutors presented evidence that someone in the Anthony home searched online for how to make chloroform, but Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy, claimed on the witness stand that she had done the searches by mistake while looking up information about chlorophyll.
Many jurors apparently went into hiding amid public outrage over the verdict and refused to comment, but two have said prosecutors couldn't conclusively prove how Caylee died.
Prosecutors Linda Drane Burdick and Jeff Ashton didn't respond to emails from The Associated Press on Sunday.
But Ashton told WKMG that "it's just a shame we didn't have it. This certainly would have put the accidental death claim in serious question."
Baez didn't respond to phone or email messages Sunday from The Associated Press but told WKMG that he expected prosecutors to bring up the search at trial.
"When they didn't, we were kind of shocked," Baez, who no longer represents Anthony, told the station. Her attorney, Cheney Mason, who was also on the trial team, didn't return an email message from AP Sunday, and his office answering service refused to take a phone message.
The sheriff's office didn't consult the FBI or Florida Department of Law Enforcement for help searching the computer in the Anthony case, a mistake investigators have learned from, Nieves said.

If you have access to a dead computer power supply you can use the case, power switch, wiring, and power port along with a 5v lead acid battery and a landscaping lamp bulb to create a rechargeable lantern.
Computer power supplies can burn out after several years and unless you're an advanced electronics hobbyist they're not worth trying to rebuild. Instructables user 300mpg notes that You can reuse many of the components as long as you're careful to follow proper capacitor safety procedures. To make the lantern you'll open up the power supply and remove all internals except for the power switch, power plug, and wiring. Cut out the fan grating and fit a 12v landscape lamp, but don't permanently attach it until you test the wiring. Wire the switches, lamps, and battery together and test the function of the lamp. Once that's done cut two openings in the top of the power supply case for a handle made from the the wiring bundle that connects the power supply unit to a motherboard?zip tie the ends together from inside the power supply unit and you'll have a comfortable handle for your lantern. Now you'll just need to cleanup the case and glue the battery and lamp to the casing; adding foam spacers between the case and the battery would be a good idea and used mouse pads work well for this..
From the original design you would connect a 12v sealed lead acid battery charger to the positive and negative connections on the power supply plug. As commenters on the Instructable pointed out, mounting a battery charger inside the case might be a superior design as then you already have the plug and can reuse a standard 3-prong computer power cord.
This seems like a fun project that makes dead components useful again and is worth doing as long as you follow all electrical safety procedures.

Household financial issues can be a real source of stress for many people. It seems that some people have a knack for keeping their?s in order, while others tend to struggle. Despite the fact that some of us have an easier time or more financial means than others, we can all get them in order, if we have the knowledge to do so. This article will provide you advice and tips to get you started on a path of sound money management.
A good grocery store sale isn?t so good if you end up wasting the items you bought. Buying large sizes, or in quantity or bulk, can be a good deal, but not if the item will go bad before you can use it. Be realistic, so you can enjoy a good bargain when you find one.
By having a savings account that you deposit into regularly, you will be building financial stability. With a savings account, you can avoid needing a loan when finances are diminished or if something unexpected occurs. Even if it?s impossible to make a significant contribution each time, save as much as you can because every little bit helps.
Use multiple accounts to keep to your budget. You can use one account for fixed expenses and the other for those expenses that are variable. This is a good way to keep track of money, where it is going, and if you will have enough for expenses.
Make concrete financial plans to ensure your personal finances are managed effectively. Having a solid plan can be motivating, as it provides you with a purpose to work hard to prevent overspending.
Writing down a budget is vital to managing your personal finances. The first of each month, compose a list which describes every expense. Make sure to include living expense, such as phones, food, heat, cars and rent. Be sure to include all expenditures that you think you will make. Add up your anticipated monthly expenses, and make sure you don?t spend more than what you have left after paying them.
Consider choosing a credit card with a rewards program. You are in a great position to apply for one if you routinely pay off your monthly balances. Reward cards provide you with cash back, airline miles, and other little perks on your everyday purchases. Figure out which rewards appeal to you the most, and compare the different offers.
If you need to make minor purchases, be sure to have a debit card or $10 in cash with you. You might not be able to use your credit card unless your purchase meets their required minimum.
You need to devise a secure method to dispose of your old financial documents. It is a good idea to invest in a shredder for this purpose. You could risk fraud and identity theft if you don?t properly dispose of old files you no longer need. You need to thoroughly protect yourself to prevent this from occurring.
Always stay in control of your finances, no matter what happens. Divide this task into smaller things, such as saving a few dollars a day. Keeping your finances in order will be much easier by following the advice offered here.

Dwarf planet Makemake is about two thirds of the size of Pluto, and travels around the Sun in a distant path that lies beyond that of Pluto but closer to the Sun than Eris, the most massive known dwarf planet in the Solar System. Previous observations of chilly Makemake have shown it to be similar to its fellow dwarf planets, leading some astronomers to expect its atmosphere, if present, to be similar to that of Pluto. However, the new study now shows that, like Eris, Makemake is not surrounded by a significant atmosphere.
The team, led by Jose Luis Ortiz (Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia, CSIC, Spain), combined multiple observations using three telescopes at ESO's La Silla and Paranal observing sites in Chile -- the Very Large Telescope (VLT), New Technology Telescope (NTT), and TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope) -- with data from other small telescopes in South America, to look at Makemake as it passed in front of a distant star.
"As Makemake passed in front of the star and blocked it out, the star disappeared and reappeared very abruptly, rather than fading and brightening gradually. This means that the little dwarf planet has no significant atmosphere," says Jose Luis Ortiz. "It was thought that Makemake had a good chance of having developed an atmosphere -- that it has no sign of one at all shows just how much we have yet to learn about these mysterious bodies. Finding out about Makemake's properties for the first time is a big step forward in our study of the select club of icy dwarf planets."
Makemake's lack of moons and its great distance from us make it difficult to study, and what little we do know about the body is only approximate. The team's new observations add much more detail to our view of Makemake -- determining its size more accurately, putting constraints on a possible atmosphere and estimating the dwarf planet's density for the first time. They have also allowed the astronomers to measure how much of the Sun's light Makemake's surface reflects -- its albedo. Makemake's albedo, at about 0.77, is comparable to that of dirty snow, higher than that of Pluto, but lower than that of Eris.
It was only possible to observe Makemake in such detail because it passed in front of a star -- an event known as a stellar occultation. These rare opportunities are allowing astronomers for the first time to find out a great deal about the sometimes tenuous and delicate atmospheres around these distant, but important, members of the Solar System, and providing very accurate information about their other properties.
Occultations are particularly uncommon in the case of Makemake, because it moves in an area of the sky with relatively few stars. Accurately predicting and detecting these rare events is extremely difficult and the successful observation by a coordinated observing team, scattered at many sites across South America, ranks as a major achievement.
"Pluto, Eris and Makemake are among the larger examples of the numerous icy bodies orbiting far away from our Sun," says Jose Luis Ortiz. "Our new observations have greatly improved our knowledge of one of the biggest, Makemake -- we will be able to use this information as we explore the intriguing objects in this region of space further."

Looking to browse with the full weight of your 64-bit hardware? Well, if you're a Firefox and Windows user, you're going to have to look elsewhere, as Mozilla has announced it's closing the development of Firefox for the bigger computer architecture. Mozilla manager, Benjamin Smedberg outlined several reasons for the decision, including limited access to 64-bit plugins, a higher propensity for the browser to hang when using available plug-ins and difficulty distinguishing between 32- and 64-bit versions when dealing with stability complaints. After posting the announcement at Bugzilla, it riled plenty of nightly testers, with one Mozilla dev suggesting that around half of them were currently using the now defunct 64-bit version -- presumably due to the fact that an official release never made it out of the gates. What are the options then, if you need your browsing 64-bit? You could return to Internet Explorer or give Opera a try -- both offer a higher bit version, or make a switch to either OS X or Linux, both of which have fully-fleshed versions of the 64-bit web browser. Check out some of the (surprisingly vigorous) debate at the source below.

It can be heartbreaking to watch someone you love suffer through an abusive relationship. You may want to do something about it but aren't quite sure how.
Here are some tips on what you should do and what you shouldn't do when you confront your loved one about leaving her abuser.
Approaching Them Initially
When you begin the conversation, stay as calm as possible. Don't use harsh language. That may scare your friend away or put her in a defensive mode. Be sure to approach her in a neutral, calm and semi-private environment. For example, if you start off by attacking the person she loves, and you call the abuser a jerk or whatever assortment of names you want to call him, of course she will see it as insulting her spouse or boyfriend and close off. Instead, talk about how you don't think he treats her as well as you think he should, and talk about how wonderful and cherished she is to you. Express your concern without backing her into a corner.
Point out Concern, But Remain Positive
While the talk will bring up negative aspects of her life, you should also focus on the positives the abused person has that are all her own. This may be her job, her children (if she has children), how much she brightens up your day, or simply her attitude. Let your friend know that you are in full support of her and that you believe she is capable, intelligent, and can make this change to leave her abuser.? Your kind, positive words will go a long way in her thought process, bring her courage and help build up her self-worth. Many women who are abused suffer from low self-esteem. They are constantly belittled and told they?re worthless, so you need to build this up little by little so your friend feels like she is capable of leaving.
Build a Network of Support
Don't assume you can do this all on your own. As noble as it is that you want to help someone you love, you may need professional help. Have a plan set up.? Your friend may need a place to go, somewhere safe where she can?t be immediately found and coerced back into her abusers arms. Consider a hotel room set up in someone else?s name, the police station, a shelter for abused women, even a friend?s home. But, if she and her abuser have children together, you may need to seek legal counsel before making a move.
Your loved one may need help from the police to protect her (and her children) if the abuse is that extreme. She may also need therapy or counseling to overcome the abuse that she has likely become accustomed to. You can support her through all this, but if you are not a professional, you should help her to find someone who is. You need to be realistic about the situation. Leaving an abusive person can cause the abuser to become even more angry and abusive. Be prepared for the worst, and make plans on how to handle the situation.
Ultimately, it?s Their Decision
Do not pressure your friend into leaving her abuser. If she does not leave by her own free will, she will likely go back. Unfortunately, she might be returning to an even worse situation since the abuser will want to isolate her from people who encourage her to leave, and she may be punished for thinking of leaving at all. Unless the abuse is bad enough to get the authorities involved, allow your loved one to make the decision.
There is only so much you can do, unfortunately, so don?t put yourself in danger or do anything too drastic. You can reach a point where you could be seen just as pushy or controlling as the abuser by your friend, and make no mistake, her abuser will most likely put that in their head.
In the end, do what you can. Be supportive, don?t be pushy, be a steady point for her, let her confide in you and get help from others. Neither one of you has to do this alone.

Exercise, appetite and weight management: understanding the compensatory responses in eating behaviour and how they contribute to variability in exercise induced weight loss
This paper [1] was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in March this year (2012). Unlike some of the research papers we?(Fitness Newspaper) have?summarised before, this article doesn?t report on a single study but instead provides a comprehensive review of a number of different studies that have all investigated how energy intake (EI) changes as a result of exercise. There?s an awful lot of information in this paper ? far too much for us to cover fully here. However, we felt that there were some important take-home points from his article that were worth mentioning?
?
Exercise, weight loss and Compensatory Eating
The paper starts off by summarising research that has investigated how exercise contributes to weight loss ? Exercise is often used (and recommended) as a means of controlling weight. However, the evidence suggests that, even when exercise is closely monitored and supervised, there is significant variability in weight change ? some individuals lose a lot of weight, some don?t lose any, and some even gain weight!
The authors note that although compliance to an exercise programme is an important issue (obviously if people aren?t doing the recommended exercise they?re unlikely to lose any weight), an issue of perhaps even greater importance (and interest)?is the issue of ?compensatory responses? ? i.e. changes in physiology and behaviour which undermine the ability of exercise to promote weight loss:
Compensatory Responses that Might Affect the Amount of Weight Lost Through Exercise
1. Gastric emptying
Exercise can have an impact on the rate of gastric emptying (the rate at which food passes through the stomach), and this in turn can have an impact on feelings of hunger or satiety (fullness). It?s possible that physical activity increases the rate of gastric emptying and therefore increases hunger, and consequently results in greater energy intake. However, exercise of different intensities and durations has been shown to have different effects on the rate of gastric emptying, and other factors also influence the rate of gastric emptying (such as meal content, meal frequency etc.) so it?s hard to disentangle the exact effects of exercise.
?
2. Appetite Peptides
Appetite peptides are molecules that stimulate or inhibit eating. For example, Ghrelin is a peptide secreted from the stomach which increases appetite and stimulates eating, whereas Cholecystokinin (CCK) and polypeptide YY peptides decrease appetite and inhibit eating. Like gastric emptying, the evidence of the effects of exercise on the secretion of these peptides is limited, and habitual diet (what people normally eat) can also have a significant impact on the proportions of these peptides that are produced.Consequently, what people are eating might undermine any beneficial effects of exercise on appetite control.Furthermore, gastric emptying may also have an impact on peptide secretion! So basically, gastric emptying, exercise and diet can all impact on appetite peptides, and the how these three factors interact is not fully understood.
?
3. Substrate Oxidation
In this context, substrate oxidation essentially refers to whether the body is relying on fat as it?s prime energy source or on carbohydrate (glycogen). It is though that a greater reliance on fatty acid oxidation increases feelings of fullness (satiety) after eating and hence lowers energy intake, and research has shown that greater carbohydrate oxidation can increase energy intake. Again, however, the effect of exercise on substrate oxidation (whether the body relies more on oxidising fat or carbohydrate) is not well understood, as the evidence out there is limited and contradictory ? with some research showing that it increases carbohydrate oxidation and some showing that it increases fat oxidation. Furthermore, again, habitual diet can also impact on the substrate oxidation, and the how exercise and diet interact to affect substrate oxidation is unclear.
?
4. Food and Taste Preferences
Yet again, the research in this area is mixed, with some studies finding that exercise does affect taste perception and others that it doesn?t. However, these mixed findings could be the result of individual differences between the participants in the studies ? with exercise making food taste better to some individuals (and hence leading to them eating more after exercise), but less good to others.
?
5. Behavioural Traits
There is evidence to suggest that aspects of people?s personalities can influence their eating response to exercise. For example, people who report that they engage in ?emotional eating? (i.e. eating in response to negative affect/emotion) tend to overcompensate for the energy expended during exercise by eating too much. Conversely, people who report opportunistic eating (i.e. eating just because food is available) tend to show a reduction in energy intake after exercise.
?
So What?
So what does this all tell us? Basically there are three take-home points from this research paper:
1. Not everyone loses weight with exercise ? some people lose a lot of weight, some lose very little and some actually gain weight, and the difference in weight lost is likely a consequence of the degree to which each individual engages in ?compensatory eating?.
2. A number of factors can affect compensatory eating in response to exercise - gastric emptying, appetite peptides, substrate oxidation, taste preferences and behavioural traits can all influence the effect that exercise has on an individual?s appetite and eating behaviour.
3. Exercise is still worthwhile - finally, and perhaps most importantly, the authors of this paper note that the beneficial effects of exercise on health (such as improved blood pressure, blood glucose tolerance, blood cholesterol, VO2max, etc.) are evident even when they do not coincide with weight loss!
?
Ultimately, everyone will experience significant health benefits by increasing their activity. However, some people might find it harder to control their appetite / eating if they engage in too much exercise and/or exercise of the ?wrong? intensity (whatever that might be). Therefore, until research sheds more light on what kind of exercise and how much is ?best?, anyone trying to lose weight would probably be wise to keep a close eye on their diet, make a note of how their appetite changes in response to exercise, and adjust what they do as best they can so that they can reap the health benefits of an active lifestyle without overeating.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? It?s a no-brainer that teens are the biggest fans of the Twilight series? final chapter that hit the box office this weekend.
But another group of fans love the fangs and fur just as much: theater owners, investors and Hollywood.
That?s because the film is poised to close out a blockbuster year for the box office, which has sent the stock prices of movie theater operators and studios soaring.
Total ticket sales are rising at a time when the industry has been struggling with increased competition from the Internet and an American public distracted with a surfeit of gadgets like iPads and online digital video streams.
?Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2? enjoyed an opening weekend domestic box office of $141.3 million. It is the fourth film this year to break the $140 million mark ? joining ?The Avengers? ?Dark Knight Rising? and ?The Hunger Games.?
It is a remarkable achievement since only four other films had openings as big before this year.
A key reason behind big opening weekends lately is the same digital technology that?s the industry?s biggest competition. Digital projectors have allowed multiplex theater owners to quickly add additional screenings of hot movies when there?s strong ticket demand. In the past, they would have needed an extra film print to add a screen.
This year, a majority of theaters around the world adopted digital projectors over traditional film projectors. The ticket sales have jacked up stock prices of movie theater operators. Regal Entertainment Group is up 28%, Cinemark Holdings has soared nearly 40%, while Carmike Cinemas has more than doubled this year. Large screen theater operator IMAX is the relative laggard of the group with only a 20% rise.
Things are even better at the studios. Lions Gate Entertainment, the independent studio behind both ?Twilight? and ?The Hunger Games,? has seen its stock climb nearly 90% since the start of the year.
?One of issues from consumer perspective is convenience,? said Rob Friedman, co-chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, the movie unit of Lions Gate. ?To be able offer enough show times to make it convenient is a major factor.?
The strong box office, ticket sales and opening weekends this year shows there is still an attraction to watching movies in theaters.
?There is very little to match the mystique of the opening of the film,? said Keith Simanton, managing editor of IMDB. ?The glamor has not gone away, even in this society.?
And all of it is good news for the studios, which now have new ways to sell movies to customers.
?I think what we?re seeing across every platform is consumption increasing,? said Friedman.
That?s why Lions Gate is not alone in posting strong stock gains this year.
Shares at other major media companies that own film studios, including Walt Disney, News Corp., Comcast, and CNNMoney owner Time Warner, are all up between 20% to 50% so far this year.
Some analysts are forecasting total domestic box office sales could reach $11 billion this year. Almost everyone expects it to top the $10.6 billion record set in 2009.
Part of that is also due to an increase in average ticket prices, helped by movies that are shown in higher-priced 3D or IMAX.
But no matter what, experts are thrilled.
?More butts in the seats ? that?s what Hollywood needs,? said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Although Sandy did billions of dollars worth of damage along the East Coast, the stored Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade supplies were unharmed.
The balloons are stored in the New Jersey town of Moonachie, according to latimes.com. The town, located about 10 miles northwest of Manhattan, was flooded by 5 feet of water due to tidal surge from Hurricane Sandy.
The design studio that houses the large balloons was not flooded and there was no damage to a nearby warehouse where most of the other parade equipment is stored.
When the balloons fly on Thanksgiving Day, 5,000 people who were impacted by Sandy will be watching from seats in the stands thanks to tickets Macy's set aside for them.
The tickets will be distributed to the neighborhoods hardest hit by Sandy. The elected officials who represent the neighborhoods will coordinate the ticket distribution, according to silive.com.
Macy's will also be providing the families with transportation to and from the parade.
The weather will be great for watching the parade. "It will be mainly dry, with a mix of clouds and sun," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Edwards.
"Winds will be out of the north, northwest and very light at 5-10 m.p.h. The temperature during the parade will start out around 46 degrees F and warm to 50 degrees F by the end."

Taxable Account Investing

Taxable Account Investing I am totally clueless about investing in a taxable account. All of our investments have been in retirement accounts. However, we just sold some property that we owned that had no debt on it and have refinanced our home to do some improvements. We will be using some of it for home improvements, but will have about $100k cash left over. I am uncertain how to best invest it to limit income taxes. We have a 55/45 allocation with DH's IRA at Vanguard (which we do draw from) and my 401(k) at Fidelity (which we don't draw from). DH is retired (he is 65) and I'm semi-retired, working very part-time. Ordinarily to make big purchases (car, major home improvement, etc) we need to withdraw from his IRA which we don't love doing since a large withdrawal is taxable. I expect that in 2013 we will be in the 25% tax bracket. I sort of plan to take the $100k that is in taxable accounts and put it in Vanguard and just have it sit there but it will be available for those kinds of large withdrawals in the future. For example, we may want to buy a car in a couple of years and we could part of it for that. Or we might use it for major home repairs, etc. (Nothing really planned for any time soon.) I'm uncertain where to put the money at Vanguard from a tax standpoint. I just don't know that much about how taxes work on investments since we have never had to pay taxes on any given that everything has been in retirement accounts. Depending on what you invest in you will pay taxes on interest payments or dividend payments. If you are investing in mutual funds, you may encounter year-end distributions of capital gains. What to invest in depends on your overall asset allocation, considering all of your accounts. The $100K could be a part of your cash allocation, and depending on your investment policy, might make up a part of your designated cash reserves. For example, I maintain a two-year cash reserve in addition to my short-term bond allocation. I can't advise on Vanguard investments, as I don't have an account with them, but would suggest that you consider EFTs as an investment vehicle as the potential for capital gains is reduced. -- Rita

I don't put anything in cash frankly (well a little in my bank account but not part of my asset allocation). Basically what I am struggling with is whether to put this in an equity fund or a bond fund. All of my 401(k) is in an S&P 500 fund At Vanguard we have our money currently in Extended Market fund Our overall allocation is 55/45. I am happy with what our investments are in Vanguard so would probably invest this 100k in one of the funds I'm already invested in. The closest we have to cash investment is the short term investment fund which is where we draw regular IRA withdrawals from. I don't want to use this 100k for that so the choices would be to invest it in the Extended market fund, high yield fund, total bond, total international, or Wellesley. Just not sure which would be better from a tax standpoint.

Most of the funds you mention are not tax-efficient and are better in the IRA. One exception is the International fund. Your investment there is subject to foreign taxes, but because it is tax deferred you do not get the credit. If you sell that in the IRA and buy it in the taxable account you will get benefit. You could then use the cash in the IRA to buy a combination of Wellington and fixed income to get back to your target allocation.

I'd keep it in cash. You are withdrawing from an IRA now. You could withdraw less to stay under the 25% tax bracket and fill in the rest of your income needs with the taxable money, saving on taxes. You can also characterize the IRA withdrawal as a Roth conversion. Again, cover your expenses normally paid with that IRA withdrawal with funds from your taxable account instead. Effectively, you end up transferring most of your taxable account value into a Roth IRA Rollover account. Then it is tax free after that, including bulk withdrawals to cover a new car. It also can allow you to continue withdrawing from your IRA only to the bottom of the 25% tax bracket while covering the rest of your needs from the Roth. That will maximize the amount of the IRA that you pull out at 15% instead of 25%. And you can invest it the same way you're used to in the traditional IRA. Watch out for the Roth 5 year rules, they may restrict your access to the Roth IRA. You must complete a Roth conversion within the calendar year, but there's no reason you have to do it this year if your income is already into the 25% tax bracket. I'd probably wait until you've studied all the tax consequences and planned it out. Then execute the plan next year. You don't want to screw it up. If you're already into the 25% tax bracket you probably won't have the taxable account hanging around for long. That's why you can just leave it in cash for now. That's your next year's expenses.

My approach is similar to what others have recommended. I look at AA across all my taxable, tax-deferred and tax-free accounts. The first priority for my tax-deferred accounts is my bond allocation. If my total bond allocation were to exceed my tax-deferred account, then the excess would go into the tax-free accounts and and lastly to the taxable account; in all cases since bond funds pay a lot of dividends and are not tax efficient. In actuality, my tax-deferred accounts exceed by bond allocation, so my taxable and tax free accounts are all equities. But I did learn one thing from this thread about the foreign tax credit that I'll need to chase. Right now, I have some Roth invested in international equities and it sounds like I would be better off to make those domestic equities and keep all my international equities in my taxable accounts. Since you have Vanguard, you can run a Portfolio Watch report across all your accounts given your target AA and then use Portfolio Tester to evaluate how to invest the $100k. Alternatively, you probably have enough at Vanguard to have them do a financial planning session for you and get additional ideas on how to place the $100k. Good luck.

I have zero interest in keeping the money entirely in cash. I've read enough to be convinced that large cash holdings are not advisable. So, I don't want to do that. Our intent with this money was to keep it for those large expenses that you know you will have but don't know when (car, major home repair like a new roof, etc.). The kind of thing where I wouldn't want to have to withdraw from the IRA due to the taxes. The hope is that we keep this money invested in the meantime and hope we don't need to do anything with it for a couple of years. It may not make sense to anyone else for us to do this instead of just spending it...but it's what we want to do. On asset allocation. We used to have total stock market in Vanguard. However, my 401k at Fidelity has limited choices, particularly those with low expenses. So I am in an S&P fund at Fidelity. To get to the desired allocation and have the right balance of types of equities we sold the total stock market at Vanguard and bought the extended market fund which basically is equities other than those in the S&P 500. Between that and what I have in my 401(k) we have the right balance among types of equities. If it wasn't for my 401(k) we probably would have total stock market but it isn't in the cards for now. Next year and as long as I work part time, I expect us to be in the 25% tax bracket. We live in a state with no income tax. I don't know how long I'll continue to work part time (as long as I like it basically). When I stop we will be probably be in the 15% bracket. Oh, we can't withdraw less to stay under the 25% tax bracket while I'm working part-time. I will get us there on my income alone and even if my income went down with DH's SS we would certainly get there.. Most of our living expenses in 2013 will be paid from my part-time income. DH does receive SS and we will have some withdrawals from his IRA (about 25% of our total income will come from those). I want to do something with this money that is relatively simple and easy to account for from a tax standpoint. While I'm an attorney, taxes are not my area. I do our own taxes using Turbo Tax so I don't want to do anything so complicated I would have hire someone to do taxes.
