look 'closely' at the edges on the maple in that stack and you can see that I have an alignment issue on my TS.

I'm trying to figure out Where the problem is though...

when I start a cut, it goes fairly smooth until about 20" into the cut, at which point i need to Both slow down and increase the pressure I'm pushing with... to the point of popping a breaker if I push too hard/fast. taking it slowly, I can get through, but with burnt edges. I've switched blades, both of mine are either 'in dire need of sharpening....' or something is out of whack.

I've checked and as near as I can tell the blade is parallel with the fence, and with the miter slots.

now this is the 'best' evidence I've got that the blade and fence are parallel.. I don't have a gauge, so I've used a square, marking a tooth and measuring distance fore and aft to the miter slot and the fence.

HOwever in mid cut, I'm getting a gap:

and yes, the board itself is straight as near as I can tell.

what am I missing in the equation?

New clues about ancient water cycles shed light on U.S. deserts

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The deserts of Utah and Nevada have not always been dry. Between 14,000 and 20,000 years ago, when large ice caps covered Canada during the last glacial cooling, valleys throughout the desert southwest filled with water to become large lakes, scientists have long surmised. At their maximum size, the desert lakes covered about a quarter of both Nevada and Utah. Now a team led by a Texas A&M University researcher has found a new water cycle connection between the U.S. southwest and the tropics, and understanding the processes that have brought precipitation to the western U.S. will help scientists better understand how the water cycle might be perturbed in the future.

Mitch Lyle, professor of oceanography, led the study with colleagues from Columbia University, University of California-Santa Cruz, Stanford University, Hokkaido University of Japan, Brown University and the U.S. Geological Survey. Their work, funded by the National Science Foundation, is published in the current issue of Science magazine.

The dry shorelines of these glacial lakes were first discovered by 19th century geologists when the west was first explored, Lyle explains, adding that the source of the additional water has been a mystery. By assembling data from ocean sediments and from dry western valleys collected over the last 30 years, Lyle and the team found a new water cycle connection between the southwest U.S. and the tropics.

"Large ice caps profoundly altered where storms went during glacial periods. Before this study, it was assumed that Pacific winter storms that now track into Washington and Canada were pushed south into central and southern California," Lyle notes.

"However, by comparing timing between wet intervals on the coast, where these storms would first strike, with growth of the inland lakes, we found that they didn't match."

The team was able to time wet periods along the California coast from pollen buried in marine sediments from cores archived by scientists at the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program at Texas A&M. They evaluated lake level studies from southeast Oregon, Nevada, Utah, eastern California, New Mexico, and west Texas to find when lakes filled in different parts of the west.

"Many teams of scientists have been working on this problem since the 1950s, when radiocarbon dating first allowed ages to be put on old shorelines," Lyle adds. "The data we synthesized covers a wide latitude so that we could determine how the glacial wet intervals operated."

Only southern California coastal wet intervals matched with the progression of high lakes inland, pointing to the development of a tropical connection, where storms cycled into the region from the tropical Pacific, west of southern Mexico.

"We think that the extra precipitation may have come in summer, enhancing the now weak summer monsoon in the desert southwest. But we need more information about what season the storms arrived to strengthen this speculation," Lyle says.

Not only is the development of the glacial lakes important from a paleoclimate perspective, but it is likely that the lakes were important to the migration of people into North America, Lyle believes. Many of the archaeological sites where early Indians settled when they first came into the U.S. are rock shelters at the edges of these ancient lakes. The lakes were a major source of fish, and a gathering place for deer and wildfowl at that time.

"What we need to do now is look at all of this on a finer scale," Lyle points out. "We need to understand better the processes that directed the storms thousands of years ago, and to predict better what changes might occur in the future."

'Modern Family' Returns -- What Did You Think?

It's been fun sampling this fall's new shows and getting to know some new TV characters. But there's no denying the pleasure of falling back into a familiar series, whose rhythmns and characters you already know and love. Season 4 of Modern Family (Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC) didn't kick off with a big trip (like season 3's opener at a Wyoming dude ranch), but with the usual characters at home, dealing with issues in their usual, unique ways. Returning to your couch to check in on what the Dunphys and Pritchetts are up to is like eating mac and cheese in your pj's. Comfortable.

Romney: Raising the stakes, lowering expectations

ANALYSIS:

Will Mitt Romney get the game changer he needs in next week's presidential debate?

Even as the Republican presidential nominee has been touting President Obama's debating chops ("The president is obviously a very eloquent, gifted speaker," Romney told Fox News this week. "He'll do just fine."), he's also been raising the stakes for his own performance.

In an interview with ABC's David Muir yesterday in Toledo, Ohio Romney pointed to the first debate -- one week from last night -- as a potential turning point in the race.

"We have a chance during the debate to make our message clear to the American people," the former Massachusetts governor told Muir, "and I'm absolutely convinced that when people see the two of us talk about our direction for America they're going to support me because I know what it takes to make the economy going again, and the president has proven he does not."

In the ABC News interview, Romney declined to predict whether he would "win" it, but said he planned to "describe very clearly what I will do to get America working again and the President will describe his own view, and I believe the American people are going to side with me."

Mitt Romney Responds to '47 Percent' Comment Watch Video Obama, Romney Aim for Early Voters Before First Debate Watch Video Obama Taps John Kerry for Romney-Campaign Prep Watch Video

Whatever happens on the debate stage next week, it will be hard to argue that either of the candidates will be unprepared. Romney has so far not scheduled any campaign events this weekend and campaign aides say that debate practice is on the agenda.

President Obama will head to Henderson, Nev., on Sunday for three days of debate prep behind closed doors, ABC News' Devin Dwyer reports. To date, Obama has attended a handful of two- to three-hour prep sessions at Democratic National Committee headquarters with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who is standing in as Romney.

Both sides are playing the expectations game, with Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki this week, arguing that President Obama "will have less time than we anticipated" to prepare for the face-off. Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski countered that "the idea a president who is known for his world class oratory, is a world-class debater who laid waste to Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and John McCain, will be unprepared debates is absurd."

Here's what's clear: Once the hour-and-a-half sparring session that will take place at the University of Denver next week is over, the expectations game won't matter one bit. It will be all about how each candidate performed in front of a television audience of millions.

There's no doubt that this is being seen as crucial moment. Teams of campaign aides from Obama headquarters in Chicago and from Romney headquarters in Boston are planning to be on hand in Colorado for the event.

BOTTOM LINE: As ABC News Political Director Amy Walter points out: At next week's debate, the pressure is on Romney to make something happen. The pressure is on Obama to make sure nothing happens.

Arrest of Google Brazil head stirs debate over Web

In this Nov. 22, 2011 photo, Google executive Fabio Jose Silva Coelho poses for a portrait in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Google Inc.'s head of operations in Brazil was detained by the country's federal police Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012 after the company failed to heed a judge's order to take down YouTube videos that the court ruled violate Brazilian electoral law. The detention came as another court ordered YouTube to remove clips of an anti-Islam film that has been blamed for deadly protests by Muslims around the globe, both joining a spate of court-ordered content-removal cases against Google's video-sharing website in Brazil. (AP) ? The arrest of a top Google executive is reviving a debate about Brazilian laws that hold services such as YouTube responsible for the videos posted on them, making the country a hotbed of attempts to stifle digital content.

Legal experts said Thursday that Google violated a judge's order to take down videos on its YouTube subsidiary that target Brazilian political candidates ? and that the judge was completely within the law in issuing the arrest warrant.

But they said the arrest of Fabio Jose Silva Coelho, the head of Google Inc.'s Brazil operations, underscores the need to modernize laws that treat offensive material on the Internet like material that is carried by newspapers, television and radio, holding platforms such as Google responsible for user-provided content.

Coelho was released shortly after his arrest Wednesday and agreed to appear before a court at an as-yet undetermined time.

"Our laws trying to govern the Internet are outdated," said Jose Guilherme Zagallo, head of the Brazilian bar association's commission focusing on information technology law. "It's not clear who is responsible for content, and that creates uncertainty for Internet companies, users and judges, who are left to interpret laws not written for the Internet."

Brazil's strict electoral laws limit what critics can say on television, radio and the Internet about candidates for office. On several occasions in recent years, media outlets have faced stiff fines for breaking the laws, but few if any officials were arrested.

Google's alleged infractions, however, are more widespread, simply because of its omnipresence. Ahead of municipal elections in Brazil next month, Google has received requests in more than 20 states to remove videos that allegedly violate those restrictions.

Google has faced a landslide of content-removal requests around the globe, including in the U.S., but Brazil makes more requests than any other nation, according to the company's summary of all the demands. Most such demands relate to legitimate attempts to enforce laws on issues ranging from personal privacy to hate speech.

Brazilian government agencies alone submitted a total of 194 content-removal requests during the final half of last year, according to a summary released by Google in June. Running just behind that was the United States, where police, prosecutors, courts and other government agencies submitted 187 requests to remove content over the same period.

Google says it complied fully or partially with 54 percent of Brazilian removal requests in the last half of 2011. Most requests involved YouTube and charges of defamation. Other requests involved the social networking site Orkut and requests to remove illegal content, such as child pornography.

Separately this week, another Brazilian court ordered YouTube to remove clips of an anti-Islam film that has been blamed for deadly protests by Muslims around the globe. Google is now selectively blocking the video clips in countries that include Libya and Egypt. Google has said it made the decision to block the video in such places due to "the sensitive situations" there.

Brazil's legal action targeting a Google executive, while rare, is not unprecedented. In 2010 in Italy, a judge held three Google executives criminally responsible for an online video of an autistic teenager being bullied. The executives were given six-month suspended sentences.

A judge in Mato Grosso do Sul state ordered Coelho arrested because the company had not removed YouTube videos making incendiary comments about an alleged paternity suit aimed at Alcides Bernal, who is running for mayor of the city of Campo Grande.

Google said it was appealing the decision. "Being a platform, Google is not responsible for the content posted on its site," the company said in a statement. Requests for further comment were not answered by Google on Thursday.

Bruno Magrani, a researcher at the Center for Technology and Society at Rio de Janeiro's Getulio Vargas Foundation, said that unlike the United States and some other countries, Brazil doesn't have legal protections for online service providers that host content provided by third parties.

There is pending legislation that would provide some protection for intermediaries such as Google. Earlier this month the company joined Facebook and online retail site MercadoLivre in sending an open letter supporting the passage of the law, called Marco Civil.

"Marco Civil establishes that providers of Internet applications are not responsible for content published by users," the letter says. "Various economic, social and legislative factors justify not holding providers responsible; without that protection, the use of online applications and platforms would be limited, which would be a loss to users."

While the measure would create some protections, it would not resolve the legal tangle facing Google's Coelho or prevent the situation from recurring, Magrani said.

The Marco Civil is general legislation, and could still be trumped by more specific electoral laws. Those laws treat an Internet platform such as Google as if it were a newspaper or a television station, holding it responsible for its content.

"It's a very serious situation," Magrani said. "Brazil needs to change its electoral law to accommodate the nature and the characteristics of the Internet. The Internet cannot be treated in the same way as traditional media."

First, he said, an Internet company cannot evaluate all the content it carries in the same way a newspaper or television channel can because of the sheer volume.

Second, "the Internet has no editor. And we don't want an editor," Magrani said.

He said asking a company to determine what users can upload is a dangerous step that could undermine freedom of information.

"If we continue threatening to jail heads of companies who don't verify content before it goes on the Internet, we will end up living in a state of censorship," he said. "If the company is running a high risk, it'll start posting less and less material. ... If companies start to feel afraid of retaliation, they'll start censoring."

The lack of protections for Internet platforms can also have a chilling effect on the development of small- and medium-size high-tech companies in Brazil that don't have the resources of big companies like Google, Magrani said.

The federal government is investing heavily to promote the tech sector, but Brazilian legislators need to diminish legal risks for startups, he said.

Maria Clara Garcaz, a 20-year-old university student in Rio de Janeiro, expressed worries about the court action.

"It's like we live in a silent, disguised dictatorship. When we had our real dictatorship, at least you knew for certain what you could and couldn't say," Garcaz said. "Political speech can be censored at any time and it's moving into the Internet, exactly where people speak out."

Aaron Hall: I?m Aaron Hall, attorney at Minneapolis. I?m here with Travis Van Slooten. He provides local SEO (search engine optimization) to small businesses throughout the country. Travis, can you tell us a little more in what you do?

Travis Van Slooten: Yes. I provide local SEO services to small businesses throughout the United States, and what entails is getting small businesses visibility and most importantly, sales via the Internet. We do that through a number of things I do with businesses.

Aaron Hall: What is the most common problem that a client has which brings that client to you?

Travis Van Slooten: Well, the most common problem I have is?the businesses I work with typically don?t have a website, or they have a website but it?s poorly designed, and it?s nowhere to be found. I?m working with businesses that are really at that kind of entry level in terms of the Internet marketing.

Aaron Hall: How do you help them once they start working with you? What?s the process?

Travis Van Slooten: The main thing I do is I always ask the small business, ?What are you goals?? because everybody?s going to have different goals as to what they want to accomplish with their website or their Internet marketing. The first thing I always ask them is, ?What are the goals?? and of course, the inevitable answer is ?We want to make money, and we want to make it through the Internet.? That?s a little too broad. We want to be more specific so a lot of times, it?s sitting down with them and drilling into what it is they do. Are there certain aspects of their business they want to concentrate on more in terms of gaining sales and leads from the Internet? An example of that is I was working with a construction company down at Florida, and he does remodelling. He builds homes. Does a number of things. After talking to him, we discovered for him, he wanted to concentrate on his remodelling services, his remodelling business. Once we have the goal in mind, then from there, we can construct a strategy to achieve that goal.

Aaron Hall: Are there any common misunderstandings that new clients have when starting to work with you?

Travis Van Slooten: Yeah. The biggest thing is this misconception that SEO is inexpensive and easy to do. It always surprises me. I work with a small business, and a small business owner will spend thousands of dollars a years in print ads, radio ads, billboards without batting an eye because it?s traditional. They know but when you start talking to them about SEO and the difficulties of SEO with the recent updates that Google came out, SEO is becoming increasingly harder to do, and it?s becoming more expensive as a result. The misconception is that SEO is cheap and when you start talking prices about SEO even though it?s in line with radio, billboard advertising, and things that they?re comfortable with, they?re shocked that it would cost ?that much.? That?s the biggest challenge I have. Educating small business owners on what SEO is, what it takes, and what it costs to do effectively.

Aaron Hall: It?s interesting that in the early 2000?s, late 90?s, you could put up a website and it would just start getting traffic but these days, the businesses online are so competitive. Your client?s competitors are spending a lot of money in SEO, and I imagine that ups the ante for what is required for them and the competitiveness and the strategy that they need to use.

Travis Van Slooten: It?s that and as I?ve just briefly mentioned, it?s Google is really making it more difficult for the small business owner to do SEO on their own. With the recent updates, the penguin updates, the panda updates, most small business owners have no idea what that is but suffice it to say, SEO?s requiring almost a full-time job, and small business owners just simply don?t have the time to deal with it. It?s the competition that increasing and it?s also Google making things a little bit more difficult so all of that together is becoming increasingly difficult. It?s actually coming to a point now where a small business owner either has to get an in-house SEO person or outsource it. It?s almost impossible on their own now.

Aaron Hall: We talk about the small business. Can you give me some examples of small businesses you?ve worked with as far as what type of businesses are they?

Travis Van Slooten: I concentrate exclusively on the service based businesses. We?re talking about the roofers. I have a gutter contractor down at Florida. Construction companies, fencing companies, dentists, chiropractors, and even some law firms.

Aaron Hall: Interesting. I know that services provide a unique challenge from a website standpoint because it?s not ecommerce. It?s not just selling a product that you can just describe. You?re talking about the individuals and what services they provide. I understand a lot more what goes behind the scenes in planning that out.

Travis Van Slooten: Yes. Definitely, there?s that. When you?re selling a product, the product a lot of times sells itself because people know the product. When you?re selling a service based business, you have to sell that customer on that person a lot of times because I?m dealing typically with a lot of business owners. When somebody comes to the website, you have to sell them on that person so that means providing them testimonials, the better business accreditation badges, and things like that. Also, pointing them to other outside resources as social proof that this guy is good and is an honest, ethical business person and that type of thing. Those are the things you don?t have to do when you?re selling a product because typically like I said, people know it. Sells itself.

Freddie Mac wins dismissal of shareholder lawsuit

(Reuters) - A federal judge has again dismissed a lawsuit accusing Freddie Mac of misleading shareholders by understating its subprime mortgage exposure and overstating its capital strength ahead of the 2008 financial crisis.

U.S. District Judge John Keenan in Manhattan said the allegations made in an amended lawsuit failed to show that Freddie Mac officials, including former Chief Executive Richard Syron, intended to mislead shareholders, or withheld significant information from them.

He also said Freddie Mac had made a "bevy of truthful disclosures" about its credit and risk exposures during the period covered by the lawsuit, including over loans it guaranteed and its activities in nontraditional markets.

"It defies logic to conclude that executives who are seeking to perpetrate fraudulent information upon the market would make such fulsome disclosures," Keenan wrote.

Shareholders led by the Illinois-based Central States, Southeast and Southwest Areas Pension Fund had accused Freddie Mac of hiding its risks after revealing a $2 billion quarterly loss on November 20, 2007.

The lawsuit covers losses by investors in Freddie Mac common and preferred shares from that date until September 7, 2008, when U.S. regulators seized Freddie Mac and larger rival Fannie Mae and put them in a conservatorship under the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Keenan had in March 2011 dismissed an earlier version of the lawsuit, which was first filed in August 2008, but given the plaintiffs a chance to amend their complaint. He refused on Wednesday to give them another chance.

The shareholder lawsuit is separate from a civil fraud lawsuit that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has been pursuing against Syron and other former Freddie Mac officials. Defendants in that case have denied wrongdoing.

The case, whose title has a different named plaintiff, is Kuriakose v. Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 08-07281.

C$ hits 2-week low as euro zone efforts flounder

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian dollar hit a two-week low against the U.S. currency on Wednesday, tracking weaker global stock and commodity markets, as worries over Spain's commitment to reform added to persistent unease over the global economic outlook.

World shares fell and the euro slipped to a two-week low amid a second day of violent anti-austerity protests in Madrid and talk of secession by Spain's wealthy Catalonia region. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who had been reluctant to ask for help, vowed that he is committed to fiscal and structural reforms.

A general strike in Greece and signs of discord among top euro zone officials over new policies to tackle the crisis added to investor concerns, taking the gloss off recent moves by the European Central Bank to calm markets by buying bonds.

"What's going on under the surface, or at least had really defined the market earlier in the day, is that all the progress that we'd made in the last couple of weeks with respect to Europe had basically run a little ahead of itself," said David Tulk, chief Canada macro strategist at TD Securities.

"We're in this waiting period right now for Spain to get its act together ... The bears are a little bit louder than the bulls today."

Concern over the euro zone's ability to tackle its financial crisis has sparked a sharp rise in volatility on equity markets, leading to the worst day since June for the S&P 500 index on Tuesday and subsequent falls across Asia.

"There's no one thing in particular the market's focusing on. We've just had this constant drip-feed of what's been taken as negative news," said Adam Cole, global head of FX strategy at RBC Capital Markets in London.

"None of them is really new, nothing that we didn't already know, but the fact that it's just been relentless all day, really, has given us this negative tone for risk generally and that's weighing on the Canadian dollar."

The Canadian dollar finished Wednesday's North American session at C$0.9852 versus the U.S. dollar, or $1.0150, down from Tuesday's close at C$0.9806, or $1.0198.

The Canadian dollar, which touched a 13-month high a week and a half ago, also underperformed against other major currencies.

Tulk said the currency's retreat was likely not over.

"We probably have a little bit further to run as you wait for more of these headlines to come out -- and our sense is that there's a little bit more bad news, or at least a sense of impatience on the part of the market," he said.

While Tulk says trading around the C$0.98 level was not unreasonable in the near term, TD does project the Canadian dollar to return to parity by the end of the year.

Canadian government bond prices were higher across the curve. The two-year bond rose 6 Canadian cents to yield 1.091 percent, while the benchmark 10-year bond gained 60 Canadian cents, yielding 1.749 percent.

Pandas become diplomatic casualties over tense ties

It was supposed to be a goodwill gesture.

After the earthquake and tsunami devastated much of her Japanese city last year, Sendai Mayor Emiko Okuyama asked Beijing if it would loan a pair of giant pandas to the local Yagiyama Zoo to cheer up young kids in the Tohoku region.

In a meeting with Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, China's Premier Wen Jiabao said he would strongly consider it.

Yet, a year later, that panda diplomacy has been stalled by an escalating dispute between China and Japan over the uninhabited Senkaku or Diaoyu islands. Michiya Ujiie, who is spearheading Sendai's efforts, says he has not spoken with his Chinese counterparts in months.

"Neither side has suggested suspending the exchange altogether," Ujiie said. "But under these circumstances, I don't expect to get a call at all."

Sendai residents aren't so eager now to accept accepting China's national treasures. Ujiie said the city has received dozens of emails from residents urging officials to halt the panda luring efforts, saying Sendai should not negotiate with a country that holds so much animosity towards Japan.

City officials hoped to firm up plans to bring the pandas to Sendai at an event marking the 40 th anniversary of normalization between Japan and China this month, but Beijing cancelled the celebration.

This isn't the first time the cuddly creatures have been dragged into diplomatic disputes.

In June, nationalist Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara quipped the newly born panda cub at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo should be named "Sen-sen" or "Kaku-kaku," referring to the Japanese name for the disputed islands, Senkaku. China calls the rocks Diaoyu.

The cub died six days later, but its body remains in a freezer on zoo grounds, nearly three months later. China maintains full ownership of the pandas it loans out, but Tokyo officials say they have not received any word from Beijing about what to do with the frozen creature.

China and Japan both claim the tiny, uninhabited archipelago in the East China Sea. Tensions between the two countries have escalated since Tokyo nationalized the islands earlier this month, setting off a wave of anti-Japanese protests throughout China.

Report: Premium hikes for top Medicare drug plans

(AP) ? Seniors enrolled in seven of the 10 most popular Medicare prescription drug plans will be hit with double-digit premium hikes next year if they don't shop for a better deal, says a private firm that analyzes the highly competitive market.

The report Monday by Avalere Health is a reality check on the Obama's administration's upbeat pronouncements. Back in August, officials had announced that the average premium for basic prescription drug coverage will stay the same in 2013, at $30 a month.

The administration's number is accurate as an overall indicator for the entire market, but not very helpful to consumers individually since it doesn't reflect price swings in the real world.

"The average senior is going to benefit by carefully scrutinizing their situation, because every year the market changes," Avalere President Dan Mendelson said. Avalere crunched the numbers based on bid documents that the plans submitted to Medicare.

The report found premium increases for all top 10 prescription drug plans, known as PDPs. However, the most popular plan ? AARP MedicareRx Preferred ? is only going up 57 cents per month nationally, to $40.42 from the current $39.85.

The seven plans with double-digit premium increases were: the Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan (23 percent); First Health Part D Premier (18 percent); First Health Part D Value Plus (17 percent); Cigna Medicare Rx Plan One (15 percent); Express Scripts Medicare-Value (13 percent); the HealthSpring Prescription Drug Plan (12 percent); and Humana Enhanced (11 percent).

Another two plans in the top 10 also had single-digit increases. They were the SilverScript Basic (8 percent) and WellCare Classic (3 percent).

On the plus side for consumers, a new low-cost plan entered the market. Premiums for the AARP MedicareRx Saver Plus Plan will average $15 a month nationally, although it won't be available everywhere. That's $3.50 less than the current low-cost leader, the Humana Walmart plan, whose premiums are rising to $18.50.

The new AARP plan is run by UnitedHealth Group Inc., the nation's largest health insurance company. United pays AARP for the right to use its name on a range of Medicare insurance products, a successful business strategy that has proven lucrative for both partners. When Humana and Walmart teamed up to offer their low-cost plan in 2011, United felt the competition.

"There is a real focus on the premium in this market," Mendelson said. "If a plan fields an offering with a low premium, it knows it can capture a significant number of customers."

Medicare spokesman Brian Cook did not dispute the Avalere estimates. "We continue to encourage seniors to shop around and find the plan that works best for them," he said.

Medicare's open enrollment season starts Oct. 15, and beneficiaries have a wide variety of choices of taxpayer-subsidized private prescription plans. Seniors and family members can use the online Medicare Plan Finder to input individual prescription lists and find plans in their area that cover them.

About 90 percent of Medicare's nearly 50 million beneficiaries have some form of drug coverage, with more than 17 million enrolled in private plans through the prescription drug program.

President Barack Obama's 2010 health care law is improving prescription drug plans by gradually closing the coverage gap known as the doughnut hole for those with high prescription drug costs.

The Avalare numbers did have one silver lining for the Obama administration. When the projections are tweaked to account for seniors switching to lower-cost coverage, premiums for 2013 are likely to remain steady.

Separately, the administration recently announced that average premiums for Medicare Advantage insurance plans will barely inch up next year on average, while enrollment in the private medical plans will continue to rise. Many Medicare Advantage plans also combine prescription drug coverage in one package deal.

But the biggest premium announcement is yet to come. Virtually all seniors pay the Part B premium for outpatient care, including those with traditional Medicare as well as those in private plans. Currently $99.90 a month, the Part B premium it is expected to rise next year by less than $10.

Propecia ? the Queen of Hair Loss Treatment | Health and Fitness ...

Propecia may sound like a fancy girls name but when it comes to dealing with hair loss she is definitely the Queen of hair restoration medications.? Of all the hair loss products on the market there are only two medications that are approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as clinically proven to promote hair growth and hair regrowth while reversing baldness.

Finasteride or Propecia is one, and Minoxidil (Rogaine or Foam Rogaine) is the other and these are the only medications that the FDA has approved and only after very extensive clinical trials.

What is Baldness?

Baldness and hair loss is caused by testosterone, and in particular a version of it known as dihydrotestosterone or DHT, the male hormone that makes us look and sound like guys.

The trouble with testosterone and DHT is that after we become adults they start having a very different set of effects on our body.

You may start noticing hair grow out of your nose or out of your ears ? why it does that we have no idea, but we also know that hair loss on our head also starts and we simply don?t buy into all the aerodynamic explanations that keep coming our way.

DHT starts to constrict the blood supply to your follicles and this starts to show initially as thinning hair leading to baldness.? If you don?t start a hair loss remedy pretty soon after baldness sets in then you?ll only be able to get some hair on there if you go get a hair transplant.

A hair transplant is a pretty drastic and expensive way of hair replacement and it?s better to deal with the problem before it gets to that point.? Tackling hair loss as soon as it starts is the best way of dealing with baldness ? remember offense in this case is the best form of defense!

Enter Propecia ? she?ll make your hair stand on end!

Propecia tackles hair loss by directly working on your levels of DHT in your body.

By lowering the level of DHT that leaves less to attack your follicles and so they stay healthier for longer.

Propecia doesn?t just do that though ? Propecia actively works to stop DHT from binding itself to follicles and choking off the blood flow.

How do I buy Propecia?

Before you can get your hands on one of the most popular hair loss treatments you?ll need to get a doctor to write a Propecia prescription for you.

You?ll find you can order Propecia easily and simply online or at your local pharmacy but you?ll find it cheaper online than in town.

How do I take Propecia?

Propecia is just one simple pill that is taken each day.? Your doctor will prescribe a dosage that is suitable for you.

Often you?ll be recommended to use a medicated shampoo such as Nizoral to help keep your scalp and hair in top condition.

Other than that, there?s nothing more to say ? it?s that easy!

How safe is Propecia?

Bottom line, Propecia is safe! It does have the potential for one major side effect, and you need to decide if you?re willing to risk that side effect. And that side effect is possible libido loss.? Yes, you could potentially lose interest in sex and perhaps have issues with getting or maintaining an erection.

So if that particularly huge side effect isn?t an issue for you, then Propecia may be for you..

Propecia went through a five year clinical program to test out how effective it is at hair restoration.? Not only that it was tested rigorously to see what the side effects were and it is perfectly safe when used as instructed, with the one side effect previously mentioned.

Remember, Propecia is only one of two medications that the FDA has approved not only for effective hair loss treatment but also because it is safe to use.? If you want to see how big a deal that is, just take a look at all the hair loss treatments that are out there and ask yourself, why only two are FDA approved!

When should I start Propecia?

The golden rule is that the sooner you start treating your hair loss condition the faster and better the results will be.

Propecia has been clinically tested and demonstrated to help regenerate hair on bald patches on the head and that is a big, big leap ahead compared to other hair treatments.

You?ll find that Propecia is not only simple to use and highly effective but very cost effective.? Many people spend thousands of dollars on hair treatments that simply don?t work.? Because Propecia has had FDA approval you know that it is not only safe but that it works!

I?ve tried tons of hair loss products and review them at my site. You can learn from my mistakes. Want to see what I am using now?? Hint: It?s not what you think.? Visit my web page to find out more ? there?s a plethora of information on every hair loss treatment imaginable.

Sports Video Games Try to Hold On, with Infinite Diversity in Finite Releases

Sports Video Games Try to Hold On, with Infinite Diversity in Finite ReleasesThe question was put forth this past week, in a podcast where I was a panelist: Are sports video games in a golden age?

"No," seems to be the most obvious answer. Ten years ago, we had competing simulation titles in college football, college basketball and in professional hockey at least, to say nothing of a viable rivalry in North America's premier sport, which brought out the best in both NFL 2K and Madden NFL instead of making both into clich?s for Internet commenters.

In those days, you got the simulation edition around the time of the real league's opening day, and then near the postseasons, arcade treats like NBA Ballers or NFL Street would show up. Console makers were pumping out their own titles in multiple sports, too, both Sony and Microsoft (even in tennis!) , and Sega, by virtue of the Dreamcast, hung on with a 2K sports line that survives today in a single title only.

So, no, this is isn't really a golden age. It's more like one of contraction or retrenchment. Forget the fact that college basketball, a sport with a multibillion-dollar TV contract, has now seen two national champions crowned with no means to recreate or depose their reign in a video game. Go down the line:. The most competitive video game matchup is FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer both releasing Tuesday, with FIFA objectively dominant in reach, sales and in the key figure of licensed teams it features.

NBA 2K13 will, for a third year, have no serious competition. There is no indication that Major League Baseball will have any presence on any console other than the PlayStation 3 next year. And ancillary titles like NBA Jam or NFL Blitz are now downloadable releases, with nowhere near the critical or sales heft of their forebears, nor their post-release support

This year, for the first time since it introduced the concept of the sports video game cover star, Madden NFL did not publish on the PlayStation 2. And yet the business of sports video gaming, which Madden symbolizes in the popular consciousness, still has one foot planted in the high development, licensing, and distribution costs of the PS2's generation. It accounts for the contraction we've seen, especially as game publishers?principally in EA Sports' 2K competition?have moved to philosophies of owning everything about the titles they publish.

That doesn't mean the model of licensed sports video game publishing is doomed or its fans are consigned to buying boutique products.

This past week NBA 2K13 revealed it would offer something called "MyTeam," a fantasy team-management mode with similarities to the "Ultimate Team" modes found in EA Sports' Madden, NHL and FIFA series. The concept is basically the same: Start with an assortment of real-world pros, play and win games to earn currency in a virtual economy, use that to improve and customize the team.

It's been an extraordinary moneymaker for EA Sports, where past efforts like NFL Head Coach and Madden NFL Arcade or NFL Blitz?games requiring ground-up development?have not justified the production cost.

The base modes of a simulation title represent the lowest margin product a sports publisher offers under a league license. That's why extending the license into arcade titles or secondary offerings has been such a concern?at least under the old model of console sports publishing. Lesser publication costs, lower barrier to gameplay, equivalent brand reach, same product price. It worked like hell in 2002, before games were distributed over console services and arcade-style sports titles were acceptable as full-priced disc releases.

Today, that won't feed the bulldog. The inability to sell secondary titles as full-price releases is partly why 2K Sports is getting the hell out of baseball. What you're seeing now is not the offering of additional separate titles, but additional moneymaking modes within those titles. FIFA Ultimate Team; Hockey Ultimate Team, MyTeam in NBA 2K13, Madden Ultimate Team and Diamond Dynasty in MLB The Show.

And if not these modes, with virtual economies and unlimited payment structures, then look at how the main modes of a console sports simulation have progressed. Sports video games now have at least four discrete forms of play?head-to-head, online head-to-head, team season and singleplayer career, with variants like online franchise and team-up play atop them. All of these modes, especially the RPG-like singleplayer career, are arguably entire games unto themselves. Madden's "Connected Careers," which strives to be a sports MMO with player-versus-coach action, probably is the best example.

I'm also struck at how popular the EA Sports Season Ticket was overseas, because in the United States it seems to deliver so little value unless you play Ultimate Team modes, where you get a discount on purchasing virtual currency. Otherwise, you're paying 25 bucks for a weekend rental of a few sports titles you have to buy later. Then I realized that because of the staggered release dates, Season Ticket's "preview weekend" in North America, where the game comes out on a Tuesday, translates to nearly a full week for Europe for FIFA fans, making the ?19.99/?24.99 cost more reasonable there?and much more profitable to EA. Football is the world's most popular sport, and this is the world's best-selling sports video game.

Rather than build extra games to make a license profitable, sports publishers are concentrating efforts inside their existing titles, seeking to increase the reasons you'll buy it?and spend more money once you have it. This appears to be the way the industry will hang on until the next console generation, which everyone expects to deliver games digitally, and maybe bring us to an era of overhauling the engine every couple of years while updating the roster, or smaller features, through downloadable patches, acquired by a subscription.

There may be fewer releases, but there are more products within the main game. It doesn't excuse the lack of competition. We are not in a golden age. But neither are we necessarily in a decline.

Stick Jockey is Kotaku's column on sports video games. It appears Sundays.

Apple seeks US Samsung sales ban, $707 million ... - Business Insider

SEOUL (Reuters) - Apple Inc has asked for a court order for a permanent U.S. sales ban on Samsung Electronics products alleged to have violated its patents along with additional damages of $707 million on top of the billion-dollar verdict won by the iPhone maker last month.

Samsung has responded by asking for a new trial.

The world's top two smartphone makers are locked in patent battles in 10 countries as they vie for top spot in the lucrative, fast-growing market.

Apple scored a legal victory over Samsung in late August when a U.S. jury found that the Korean firm had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded the U.S. firm $1.05 billion in damages.

In a motion filed late Friday U.S. time, Apple sought a further $400 million damage award for design infringement by Samsung; $135 million for willful infringement of its utility patents; $121 million in supplemental damages based on Samsung's product sales not covered in the jury's deliberation; and $50 million of prejudgment interest on damages through December 31. The requests together come to $707 million.

Apple wants the injunction to cover "any of the infringing products or any other product with a feature or features not more than colorably different from any of the infringing feature or features in any of the Infringing Products."

Such a wide-ranging sales ban could result in the extension of the injunction to cover Samsung's brand-new Galaxy S III smartphone.

'RECTANGLES WITH ROUNDED CORNERS'

Samsung, in a filing to the U.S. court, asked for a new trial to be held.

"The Court's constraints on trial time, witnesses and exhibits were unprecedented for a patent case of this complexity and magnitude, and prevented Samsung from presenting a full and fair case in response to Apple's many claims," Samsung said.

"Samsung therefore respectfully requests that the Court grant a new trial enabling adequate time and even-handed treatment of the parties."

In a separate statement, Samsung lamented the fact that patent rulings should cover issues such as the shape of the product in addition to technological points.

"It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies," it said.

The Korean firm earlier this week said it plans to add Apple's new iPhone 5 to the existing U.S. patent lawsuits, stepping up its legal challenge as the two companies seek to assert rights to key technologies.

Apple said it wanted the court to award it damages that reflect "a rational and fair effort to address Samsung's willful misconduct that has and will impose lasting harm on Apple."

The Korean firm was the world's top smartphone maker in the second quarter of this year, shipping more than 50 million phones, nearly double Apple's 26 million iPhone shipments.

Both companies are raising their marketing spending to promote their latest products ahead of the year-end shopping season.

What Congress did and didn't do in its final week

The 112th Congress has been one of the least productive in recent history. Here is a look at what Congress has accomplished and left undone in its final week before leaving for the election campaign:

Accomplishments:

?Congress was scheduled to complete its major task for the week early Saturday with a Senate vote on a six-month stopgap spending bill to keep federal agencies running past the end of the budget year and the elections. The House approved the legislation last week. Action was needed before the budget year ends on Sept. 30 to avoid a partial government shutdown.

?The House passed a package of measures to promote increased coal production and ease environmental restrictions imposed on coal by the Obama administration. The bill is unlikely to be taken up in the Senate.

?The House moved to rescind guidelines introduced by the Health and Human Services Department giving states more flexibility in how they administer welfare-to-work requirements under the 1996 welfare overhaul act. Republicans say the guidelines are an attempt to undermine work requirements. The bill has little chance in the Senate.

?The House Ethics Committee said it won't charge Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., on allegations that she violated ethics rules by steering federal bailout money to a bank where her husband owned stock.

Major legislation left for the lame-duck session in November:

?Congress has yet to deal with the tax cuts that will expire at the end of the year, including the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, tax cuts for middle-class households, tax credits for businesses and the payroll tax cut.

?Congress must still decide what to do about spending cuts of $109 billion to defense and non-defense programs that will take place automatically at the start of the new year if alternatives are not found.

?Congress faces a Jan. 1 deadline to avert an almost 30 percent cut in Medicare reimbursements to doctors.

?The current five-year farm and nutrition bill, which sets policy for farm safety net programs and funds the food stamp program, expires Sept. 30. The Senate passed a new five-year bill in June and the House Agriculture Committee approved its version in July, but the full House has yet to act. The two chambers also have not been able to agree on disaster relief for farmers hit by the drought.

?The Senate has passed legislation to overhaul the Postal Service, which is losing $25 million a day, but the House has yet to act.
