Yankees' A-Rod gets day off - and he's not hurt

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:52 a.m. ET June 16, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Rodriguez has the chance to enjoy a rare sensation this season - a day off not related to an injury.

The New York Yankees' third baseman wasn't in manager Joe Girardi's starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Washington Nationals. According to Girardi, it was "just a day off."

A-Rod had missed only one previous game this season. For the first time in several years, he's been healthy.

Said Rodriguez: "I'm giddy when I get up in the morning. I'm giddy. It's nice to wake up and make it about baseball."

Rodriguez, who turns 37 next month, has been on the disabled list every year since 2008. Not this year. Not yet, anyway.

Rodriguez needs one RBI to pass Jimmie Foxx for sixth place on the career list.

Scientists find humongous methane lake on Saturn's moon (+video)

The otherwise dry tropics of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, hold a massive lake of methane that is thought to be fed by underground channels.?

An oasis of liquid methane has unexpectedly been discovered amid the tropical dunes of Saturn's moon Titan, researchers say.

They found that this frigid methane world has some striking similarities to places on Earth. From NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

This lake in the otherwise dry tropics of?Titan?hints that subterranean channels of liquid methane might feed it from below, scientists added.

Titan has clouds, rain and lakes, like Earth, but these are composed of methane rather than water. However, methane lakes were seen only at Titan's poles until now ? its tropics around the equator were apparently home to dune fields instead.

Now near-infrared?pictures of Titan?from the Cassini spacecraft currently orbiting Saturn collected since 2004 suggest a vast methane lake exists on the surface in the moon's tropics, one about 925 square miles (2,400 square kilometers) large and at least three feet (1 meter) deep.

"Titan's tropical lake is roughly the size of the Great Salt Lake in Utah during its lowest recorded level," study lead author Caitlin Griffith, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona at Tucson, told SPACE.com. "Our work also suggests the existence of a handful of smaller and shallower ponds similar to marshes on Earth with knee- to ankle-level depths." [An Earth-like Lake on Titan (Video)]

A number of models of methane's behavior on Titan convincingly show that lakes are not stable at the moon's tropical latitudes. "Any liquid deposited in the tropical surface evaporates quickly and eventually is transported by Titan's circulation to the poles, where the large polar lakes appear," Griffith said.

"This discovery was absolutely not expected," Griffith said. "Lakes at the poles are easy to explain, but lakes in the tropics are not."

The researchers argue that these models of?methane's behavior on Titan?remain valid. The lake's presence during the moon's dry season several years before the arrival of seasonal tropical clouds and its long lifetime are evidence against it being a rain puddle, which would evaporate quickly.

Romney won't say he'll overturn immigration order

(AP) ? Mitt Romney is refusing to say that he would overturn President Barack Obama's new policy allowing some young illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

The Republican presidential candidate was asked three times in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation" whether he would overturn the executive order issued Friday if he's elected in the fall. He refused to directly answer.

"It would be overtaken by events," Romney said when pressed for the second time by moderator Bob Schieffer during the interview taped Saturday while the former Massachusetts governor's bus tour stopped in Pennsylvania.

He explained the order would become irrelevant "by virtue of my putting in place a long-term solution, with legislation which creates law that relates to these individuals such that they know what their setting is going to be, not just for the term of a president but on a permanent basis."

Romney's Rust Belt tour swept through Ohio on Sunday. He attended a Father's Day pancake breakfast with two of his sons and five of his 18 grandchildren. He told a rain-soaked crowd that the weather was a metaphor for the country and that "three and half years of dark clouds are about to part."

He planned two additional stops in the state Sunday.

In the TV interview, Romney suggested that Obama's decision on immigration was motivated by politics. "If he felt seriously about this he should have taken action when he had a Democrat House and Senate, but he didn't. He saves these sort of things until four and a half months before the general election," he said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe, sent by the White House to four of the talk shows, contended that Obama's action, which appeals to Hispanic voters who are critical to the president's re-election effort, was not "a political move."

Obama's order has put Romney in the difficult position, forcing him to decide between possibly alienating Hispanic voters with tough talk or stoking anger within a conservative GOP base that was slow to warm to him during the primary process.

Romney's comments represent a further softening of his rhetoric on immigration since the GOP primary campaign ended.

For example, before the Iowa caucuses in January, when he faced the challenge of winning over the right-wing base of the GOP, he pledged to veto legislation backed by Democrats that would have created a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Instead of emphasizing the plight of illegal immigrants, Romney focused on the consequences illegal immigration has for U.S. jobs.

Obama's immigration announcement disrupted the start of Romney's five-day bus tour through small cities and towns in six important states.

The tour, now on its third day, scheduled two stops are in Ohio towns just outside the metropolitan areas of Cleveland and Columbus. Romney spent the first two days in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, where he assailed Obama and insisted that he's the candidate who will give middle-class Americans "a fair shot."

The Obama administration said the policy change announced Friday will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. Obama's move bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the Democrats' long-stalled legislation aimed at young illegal immigrants who went to college or served in the military.

Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be able to avoid deportation if they can prove they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED diploma or certificate, or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed.

Romney's CBS interview was his first in more than a year with a Sunday talk show on a network other than Fox. It covered a range of topics, including health care, Romney's political future and the European financial crisis.

Romney said that the American banking sector "is able to weather the storm" in Europe. He said European countries are capable of dealing with their mess "if they choose to do so" and the U.S. doesn't want to get into the business of bailing out foreign banks. Romney also does not favor another round of economic stimulus by the Federal Reserve, saying a previous one didn't have the desired effect.

The former Massachusetts governor, whose health care plan for the state served as the model for the national health reform law, outlined steps he'd take if the Supreme Court strikes it down. On Iran, Romney said he would be willing to "take military action if necessary" to prevent the country from becoming a nuclear power.

Romney also insisted that he isn't worried about his own political future. "I don't have a political career," Romney said. "I spent my life in the private sector. I don't care about re-elections."

Schieffer asked, "So you're not saying you just intend to serve one term?"

Romney replied that for him "this is not about politics. This is not about did I win this or did they win this. This is about what can we do to get America right."

They have got made the connection using personal computers, a user-friendly experience to make this easy for the most popular man to create friends with all the software.

Computers, as we both know, can perform complicated statistical functions and also procedure large amounts info. Thanks to their own computational forces, long and also complex calculations can be carried out within seconds. They may be programmed to be able to implement complex training sequences through the use of programming dialects. Which reminds me of the software program business, one of the most intensifying sectors of the world. Software gave rise to this market and also altered the face of the world.

The actual multimedia capabilities had by the computers cause them to one of the ideal audio-visual growing media. They may be made to play films and also songs. They provide assistance to some variety of storage media like CDs, DVDs, floppy devices and UNIVERSAL SERIES BUS drives. Pc hard drives may also be capable of storing and also enjoying sound and also video clip. And how has this affected existence? Properly, it really is because of these storage and also audio-visual growing media, that people may maintain soft-copies of data. Gone are the days, when we used to file on paper! No longer do college students maintained conventional notebook computers. Most of them possess mobile computing today. Today?s education and learning is all about PowerPoint delivering presentations and e-homework assignments. TVs and also radios were as soon as, the only real means of leisure, however, not anymore. This enjoyment is about the computer and also Internet technology!

Perhaps, one of the major advantages of the computer technologies is actually their ability to provide us using Internet access. Computers have networking abilities, which makes it possible to connect several computers as well as accomplish an change of information together. Network conversation is possible, thanks to the particular network functions offered by the pc technology.

These had been some of the important effects of computer technology on this life. Record can go upon. However , the actual fact you are on the personal computer reading through concerning the effects of software, which I have tapped out into a pc, talks a lot about how this particular technology offers affected our lives. Vatican criticizes US nun's book on sexuality, saying it contradicts church teaching

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican has sharply criticized a book on sexuality written by a prominent American nun, saying it contradicted church teaching on issues like masturbation, homosexuality and marriage and that its author had a "defective understanding" of Catholic theology.

The Vatican's orthodoxy office said Monday that the book, "Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics" by Sister Margaret Farley, a member of the Sisters of Mercy religious order and emeritus professor of Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School, posed "grave harm" to the faithful.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said that in the 2006 book, Farley either ignored church teaching on core issues of human sexuality or treated it as merely one opinion among many.

Farley said Monday she never intended the book to reflect current official Catholic teaching. Rather, she said, she wrote it to explore sexuality via various religious traditions, theological resources and human experience.

The Farley critique, signed by the American head of the congregation, Cardinal William Levada, comes amid the Vatican's recent crackdown on the largest umbrella group of American sisters. The Vatican last month essentially imposed martial law on the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, accusing it of undermining church teaching and imposing certain "radical feminist themes" that were incompatible with Catholicism.

It ordered a full-scale overhaul of the group and appointed three bishops to carry it out.

The crackdown on Farley, a top American theologian, will likely fuel greater resentment at Rome among more liberal-minded American sisters.

The Vatican examination of the book began in 2010 and involved seeking Farley's responses to its concerns. After her replies failed to satisfy the Congregation, it moved to a full-fledged "examination in cases of urgency" that concluded Dec. 14.

Pope Benedict XVI approved the decision last March and ordered the decision published.

In its statement, the Vatican singled out specific problems in Farley's book which it said "affirms positions that are in direct contradiction with Catholic teaching in the field of sexual morality."

Farley, for example, writes that masturbation doesn't raise any moral problems and can actually help relationships rather than hinder them. The Vatican asserted that according to church teaching "masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."

Farley wrote that homosexual people as well as their activities should be respected. Church teaching holds that gays should be respected but that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered."

On gay marriage, Farley said legal recognition of gay marriage can help transform the stigmatization of gays. Levada wrote back that approving gay marriage would not only signal approval of "deviant behaviour" but would obscure the value of traditional marriage between man and woman in society.

"The principles of respect and non-discrimination cannot be invoked to support legal recognition of homosexual unions," he wrote.

In her statement, Farley said she had aimed to propose a framework for sexual ethics that "uses a criteria of justice" in evaluating sexual relations.

She acknowledged that her responses to certain issues do depart from traditional doctrine, but said they nonetheless were coherent in theological and moral traditions.

"The fact that Christians (and others) have achieved new knowledge and deeper understanding of human embodiment and sexuality seems to require that we at least examine the possibility of development in sexual ethics," she wrote.

She said she appreciated the Vatican's work but lamented that her positions weren't reflected in the Congregation's final document.

The Rev. James Martin, a liberal-leaning Jesuit author, said the notification will sadden many Catholic theologians who consider Farley a mentor.

"It will also, inevitably, raise strong emotions among those who already feel buffeted by the Vatican's Apostolic Visitation of Catholic sisters in the U.S., and its intervention into the LCWR," said Martin, who has been a vocal supporter of U.S. sisters since the Vatican crackdown.

Farley has received 11 honorary degrees over her lifetime, is a past president of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Catholic Theological Society of America, and won an award in 2008 for "Just Love."

That said, Farley doesn't identify herself as a member of the Sisters of Mercy on either her official Yale biography or on the book's cover.

The Vatican criticism, while seemingly harsh, is rather tame. It's not a formal censure of Farley herself, but just the book. And given that Farley doesn't teach at a Catholic university, the Vatican couldn't forbid her from teaching as it has done with other Catholic theologians who don't toe the Vatican line.

But the Vatican did seem indirectly to hold Farley's superiors to blame for having allowed her to voice such positions that are so contrary to church doctrine. The Vatican notification said it was saddened that a "member of an institute of consecrated life" would do such a thing.

Farley's superior, Sister Pat McDermott, defended Farley and said she was deeply saddened that the Vatican had criticized "the significant pastoral and ethnical thinking that are represented in her book."
