Mount Rainier body confirmed as suspected gunman (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? A body found face down in the snow at Mount Rainier National Park is that of an Iraq war veteran suspected of killing a park ranger, then fleeing into the wilderness, authorities said on Monday.

Park spokeswoman Lee Snook said the body was confirmed to be that of 24-year-old Benjamin Colton Barnes, who was suspected of shooting ranger Margaret Anderson dead on Sunday when she stopped his vehicle at a roadblock.

Snook said Barnes' body had been found lying face down in the snow and partially submerged in the Paradise River above Narada Falls following an exhaustive manhunt by 200 local, state and federal law enforcement agents.

She said the body was discovered wearing only a T-shirt, pants and one tennis shoe and that a gun was found about 50 yards away.

"The conjecture is he died from exposure to the elements," Snook said, adding that temperatures dipped into the 20s overnight in Mt. Rainier National Park.

The body, which was initially spotted from the air by search and rescue teams, had "no heat signature," Washington State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill said in a tweet.

Authorities say Barnes fled into the backcountry following the shooting death of Anderson, 34, on New Year's Day, which prompted the massive search and the evacuation of some 125 tourists from the park.

"Like any criminal, he's not important. Our emphasis is on Margaret," Pierce County Fire Chief Garry Olson said, remembering the slain ranger as "friendly, dedicated and a hard worker."

Residents of Eatonville, where Anderson lived, were shaken by the death of the popular park ranger.

"It's just very sad, everyone in town knew her," said Teresa Mackey, manager of the Cruiser Cafe in Eatonville, just west of the park.

Of Barnes, she said: "People are very happy he's been found."

The former U.S. Army private was also suspected in a separate shooting incident on early New Year's Day that injured three men and a woman at a house party in the Skyway neighborhood of Renton, Washington near Seattle, according to the King County Sheriff's Department.

Barnes received a Chapter 14 misconduct discharge in November of 2009 after being charged by civilian authorities with driving under the influence and improperly transporting a privately owned weapon, Army officials said.

He served one tour of duty in Iraq, the officials said.

Photographs released by authorities showed a heavily tattooed Barnes with the words "Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust" on the back of his neck.

The park, which is about 80 miles southeast of Seattle, was expected to remain closed to visitors until Wednesday, Snook said.

About 1.7 million visitors traveled in 2010 to Mount Rainier National Park, established by Congress on March 2, 1899.

Amazon And Microsoft Engineers Launch 21habit To Help You Track Your New Year?s Resolutions

21habitEspecially at this time of year, more and more consumers are flocking to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to express resolutions or personal goals publicly. But simply expressing your resolution via a Tweet or Status Update doesn't help you actually break a habit or resolve an issue for the long term. Enter 21habit, which is a simple tool designed to help people make or break habits, 21 days at a time. It's also a great way for people to track their New Year's Resolutions. And in addition to helping people make changes in their lives, 21habit raises money for charity. The startup was actually founded (and self-funded) by Microsoft software developer Pranav Goel, and Amazon engineers Himanshu Khurana, Hemanth Pai and Ian McAllister (who heads up new traffic and customer growth initiatives at Amazon) as a side project. Here's how it works.

Ethiopian troops enter Somalia, take control of border town; residents reported to flee

Resident Mohammed Abdi said hundreds of residents fled Beledweyne on Saturday after hundreds of Ethiopian and Somali troops moved in. Capt. Hashi Nor of the Somali military confirmed that Somali and Ethiopian troops had moved in.

?

??I saw Ethiopian troops standing at the doors of neighboring homes. Somali soldiers are also searching the homes,? Abdi said. ?Al-Shabab retreated back to Bulo Burte and also many of the residents fled, and those who remained are in their homes.?

The military movement appears to be a third front against al-Shabab, Somalia?s strongest militant group. Kenyan troops moved into Somalia in mid-October in a push against the militants in the country?s south. African Union troops from Uganda, Burundi and most recently from Djibouti have mostly pushed al-Shabab fighters out of the capital, Mogadishu.

?We are in full control of Beledweyne now and our troops will move forward in the coming hours,? Nor, the Somali military officer, said by phone from Beledweyne.

Abdi said the sound of gunfire could be heard in Beledweyne but that he did not believe actual battle was taking place. However, al-Shabab on its official Twitter feed said that a battle that began at 6 a.m. was still ?raging? in the city as of midday.

Al-Shabab said that a ?majority? of Beledweyne residents joined al-Shabab ?to thwart the offensive.? It claimed that dozens of Ethiopian troops had been killed, but that was impossible to verify and was likely an exaggerated claim. It later said on Twitter that al-Shabab was executing a planned withdrawal and would surround the city.

Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali said in a statement that Somalia?s armed forces had taken over ?strategic places? from al-Shabab in the central region of Hiran on Saturday. He did not make direct mention of involvement by Ethiopian troops.

?We are officially requesting the international community and the neighboring countries like Ethiopia to stand on our shoulders and help the Somali people and their government for the historic operation to liberate the country from this brutal terror group,? he said. ?We are also asking the humanitarian aid agencies to reach and help people living in the areas liberated from al-Shabab.?

U.S.-backed Ethiopian troops moved into Somalia in 2006 at the invitation of the weak, U.N.-backed Somali government. But the incursion was seen by many Somalis as an unpopular invasion and actually helped give birth to the al-Shabab movement. Ethiopians pulled out in early 2009, and there are fears that a new push by Somalia could be a propaganda coup for al-Shabab.

Ethiopia in November said it was considering whether to contribute troops to the African Union force in Somalia. Kenya?s parliament recently voted for its forces to join the AU force. That move is awaiting approval by the United Nations.

The central Somalia town of Beledweyne lies about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the border with Ethiopia. A commercial hub, it lies on a key road that links Mogadishu with northern Somalia. Control of the town has changed hands frequently in recent months as different militias push to seize control of it.

NFL Playoff Predictions: Why Green Bay Packers Will Run the Table

There's been a lot of talk on whether the Green Bay Packers are vulnerable after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15, breaking their undefeated streak.

And, the reality is, anything can happen in the NFL playoffs.

But the Packers are still the best team in the NFL?and it's not even close.

Besides the team's amazing consistency (one bad game in 15 is nothing to be ashamed of), the Packers are averaging a league-high 34.3 points per game behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And they distance themselves from high-scoring teams like the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints because they have a better defense, led by linebacker Clay Matthews.

Plus, they already showed they could beat the Saints in Week 1 with their 42-34 victory.

On top of all of this, however, is the fact that the Packers will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, which is particularly significant because they play at the raucous Lambeau Field and haven't lost at home since Week 6?of last season.

As of now, I have the Patriots giving the Packers the most trouble in their postseason run. I have the Patriots meeting up with the Packers in the Super Bowl.

But the Patriots, despite racking up 12 wins this season, have some legitimate concerns.

Will the Packers win their second straight Super Bowl?

Will the Packers win their second straight Super Bowl?

  • Yes

  • No

For one, they don't severely limit opponents' offenses, and have given up 24 points or more to the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins in recent weeks.

But, most importantly, teams have their ways with them in the passing game. The Patriots have given up 293.8 passing yards per game this season, worst in the NFL.

And while the Packers have given up 286.3 passing yards per game, they make up for it with an opportunistic defense that has racked up 29 interceptions, by far the most in the NFL. They also have five defensive touchdowns this season.

Every team will hit bumps along the way during an NFL season.

But the Packers are done losing for the rest of the season and will win their second consecutive Super Bowl.

98% Le Havre

All Critics (56) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (55) | Rotten (1)

'Tis the season, so the saying goes. And when it comes to Aki Kaurism?ki, it holds true. The Finnish writer-director arrives bearing a gift wrapped in a contemporary immigration fable.

If the bummers and ambiguity of some of this season's movies are getting you down - or, hey, just the bummers and ambiguities of life - make your way to Le Havre. You won't be sorry.

The Finnish director's sense of humor is dry and dark as pitch, as he consistently finds moments of absurdity in the midst of strife and tragedy.

Kaurism?ki wrote the script, I think, with secret credit from Mother Goose and some fabric softener.

"Le Havre" is a small bit of movie magic, a story that plays more as a fable even as it deals with something as topical as immigration.

The film is especially comforting if you love old movies, as Kaurismaki does.

The latest work by Finnish cult director Aki Kaurismaki is is his strongst in a decade--and one of 2011 best foreign pictures.

The movie never wears out its welcome with an efficient 93-minute running time. Besides the four principal characters, the supporting cast makes an impression playing a grocer, a baker, a tavern owner and Marcel's best buddy from Vietnam. It also...

While the film never reaches any hugely profound revelations with its parable-styled stories of compassion and community, and occasionally feels a little slight, it's also enormously enjoyable and gorgeous to watch.

It's a puzzle, and an intriguing one.

In two stories of evolving trust and secrets, Le Havre reflects the essential simplicity of the moral choices made in its simple-seeming camera set-ups.

Kaurismaki's movie about a shoeshine man and an illegal immigrant is nothing less than a joy

A wonderfully concise, unfussy movie; it is "easy" by the director's standards, which is to say that it doesn't leave any significant ellipses in the narrative up until the aggressively darling ending.

...an upbeat little tome that leaves a good feeling to the spirit.

Kaurism?ki can almost restore your hope in humanity.

Kaurismaki dives into French film culture in 'Le Havre'

You almost become a citizen of Le Havre, watching this film and rejoicing at the end as two newfound, unexpected friends share a drink.

It's a straightforward yet completely artificial scenario, with welcome overtones of Italian Neo-Realism.

Unlike the director's typical hero, Wilms's spare performance conveys confidence rather than defeat. He and the kid warm the heart, thawing Kaurism?ki's usual icy aplomb.

Heart-wrenching but ultimately inspirational.

Le Havre is not the filmmaker's best work (see La Vie de Boh?me for that), but no matter the storm, we should be grateful to dock in this port.

Injury update on Randy Orton

INDIANAPOLIS ? WWE Superstar Randy Orton suffered an injury at SmackDown in Indianapolis that could keep him sidelined for a few weeks, and will prevent him from competing at upcoming WWE live events.

The injury occurred during a brutal Falls Count Anywhere Match with Wade Barrett. As their brawl spilled over outside the ring, the referee was knocked out when Orton shoved Barrett into him. Next, the cut-throat brawl continued within the Conseco Fieldhouse, where The Viper ended up at the bottom of a set of stairs. With WWE?s Apex Predator down, Barrett approached, but then decided to leave through an arena door (FULL SMACKDOWN RESULTS | WATCH | PHOTOS).

Although the full extent of The Viper?s injury remains to be seen, WWE physician Dr. Michael Sampson examined Orton and updated WWE.com about his condition.

?Randy suffered a herniated disc on the L4-L5 level on the left side, and that?s resulting in pain and weakness down his leg.? Dr. Sampson explained. ?He?s going to need some time off for rehab, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy.?

Sheamus is scheduled to replace The Viper in Street Fights against Wade Barrett at WWE live events this week.

Stay with WWE.com for further updates.
